Sales, Stevens propel Lehigh past UMBC, 1-0

10/26/2005 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer

CATONSVILLE, Md. – Lehigh sophomore goalkeeper Charlie Sales not only pitched a shutout in net, but he also assisted on the game’s lone goal as Lehigh topped UMBC by a 1-0 score at UMBC Stadium on Wednesday evening.  With the win, Lehigh ends the Terriers 28-match unbeaten streak at home, which dated back to September of 2002.  The victory improves the Mountain Hawks record to 9-3-1 on the season, while the setback drops the Retrievers to 8-5-3 in 2005.

"This is a great road win for us tonight," explained head coach Dean Koski.  "To be able to come down here where UMBC has not lost in three years, and come away with a victory, this gives us good momentum heading into the weekend.  The defense played well tonight, and Jimmy (Stevens) came through with a great goal."

The lone score of the night came in the game’s 18th minute.  Sales punted the ball where it was played off a high bounce by senior Jim Stevens, who found the back of the net.  The goal was the team-leading ninth of the season for Stevens.

The Mountain Hawks defense held on from there, preserving the shutout and the win.  Sales was credited with three saves on the night in the win.  UMBC’s Steve King made two saves in 90 minutes of action on the night.

The Retrievers out-shot Lehigh 12-6 for the match.  Each team had two corner kick opportunities on the night.

Lehigh returns to the pitch on Saturday, as the Mountain Hawks welcome Colgate to the Ulrich Sports Complex in a pivotal Patriot League match.  Action gets underway at 7:00 with live streaming audio and video on lehighsports.com, powered by Yahoo! Sports.
