Lehigh offense explodes in 5-0 win

Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh used a five goal outburst to pick up its second win of the season on Sunday afternoon, a 5-0 shutout over Rider in the Lafayette Soccer Classic at the Ulrich Sports Complex.  Junior Jim Stevens found the back of the net twice, and Sam Bishop and Charlie Sales combined to keep the Broncs out of the net.  With the win, Lehigh improves to 2-1 on the season, while Rider falls to 0-4.

Stevens scored his first goal of the contest at the 19:25 mark of the opening half, when he took a pass from Brandon Smith and chipped the ball over the head of the keeper.  Stevens struck again when freshman Joe Clemente crossed him the ball and Stevens smashed it into the back of the net.

Senior Kyle Hartman tallied his first score of the game in the opening minutes of the second half on a penalty kick and freshman Patrick Starsinic took a Joe Verdi feed 13 minutes later to put the Mountain Hawks in front 4-0.  Clemenete then got in on the scoring act when he scored off of a feed from junior Peter Classi and Lehigh had the game in hand.

Bishop stopped two shots on the day, while Sales sent back one.  Junior Adam Williamson led Lehigh with four shots, while for the Broncs Dylan Matlack got off two shots.  Lehigh outshot Rider 19-6 on the afternoon and had four corner kicks to the Broncs three.

“I think we struggled a little bit in the first half,” explained head coach Dean Koski.  “The guys that came off of the bench really stepped up for us though.  Jimmy Stevens had two goals and the second team as a unit, responded well for us.”

Stevens, Starsinic and Clemente were all named to the Lafayette Soccer Classic All-Tournament Team, while Lafayette's Victor Krasij was named the MVP.

Lehigh returns to action on Friday evening as the Mountain Hawks take on Jacksonville in the Nike Classic at the Ulrich Sports Complex.  Game time is set for 7:30 and all of the action can be heard live on lehighsports.com.  The game will be the first time that the two schools have ever met.
