Lehigh wins third in a row with shutout

9/12/2004 12:00:00 AM | Field Hockey

Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh used a tough defense and efficient offense to pick up its third consecutive victory and move to 3-3 on the season.  The Mountain Hawks picked up a 3-0 win over Davidson on Sunday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex and have now scored 15 goals in their last three games, while only allowing two.  Davidson falls to 1-3 on the season.

Junior Mary Beth Kuenne scored the first of her two goals on the day at the 2:43 mark of the first half when she lofted a penalty corner beautifully over the Davidson goalie’s head and Lehigh was in business.  Kuenne received an assist from Marissa Iannarone and Krista Jamieson on the goal.  The two teams then struggled to find offense for the rest of the half, although Lehigh dominated the possession on the offensive end.  The game went into halftime with Lehigh in front 1-0.

Kuenne opened the second half with her second goal of the afternoon at the 51:27 mark off of  a feed from Iannarone and Kristi Miller and the Mountain Hawks were in front 2-0.  Freshman Katie Noon continued her scoring streak as she scored her fifth goal in three games off an assist from freshman Megan Linaberry and the Mountain Hawks were in total control.

Lehigh outshot Davidson seven to five for the game and had eight penalty corner to the Wildcats five.

Senior Jeanine Hoff played the entire game in goal for Lehigh and sent back three Wildcat shots to pick up the shutout victory.  For Davidson, Sarah Nolan stopped three Mountain Hawk shots on the day.

Head Coach Julie Mazer was very happy with the win and liked the way her team came out today.  “I think we had a chance to send a statement today for our program, and we did that.  We talked before-hand about playing a complete game, on both sides of the ball from beginning to the end."  Mazer continues, “We are really seeing one another and connecting better than we ever have in my two years here.”

Lehigh returns to action on Wednesday when the Mountain Hawks travel to West Long Branch, New Jersey to take on Monmouth.  The game is scheduled to begin at 4:00.  A televised replay of Sunday's victory can be seen on Service Electric Cable's 2 Sports on Sunday night at 6:00 pm.
