9/10/2004 12:00:00 AM | Volleyball

- Lehigh picked up its first win of the 2004 season Friday night, rallying from 2 games-to-none down to defeat Columbia 3-2 in the second game of the 7th Annual Mountain Hawk Classic. Game scores were 20-30, 28-30, 30-25, 30-23, 15-13. The Mountain Hawks improve to 1-5 on the season. Columbia is 0-1.

The Mountain Hawks were sluggish early on as they dropped game one. In game two they raced to a 24-15 lead before allowing the Lions to mount an 8-0 run to get back into, and eventually win the game.

In game three the Mountain Hawks put together a 7-0 run of their own and held on for a five point victory. Amanda Moran, who picked up her first win as Lehigh coach noticed a change in her team’s demeanor.

“The girls started understanding what I wanted them to do,” Moran said. “Their confidence level took off. They were thinking, not reacting.”

Game four was a tight-back and forth affair with Lehigh pulling away at the end. The game five race to 15 was tight as well. It was 13-13 when Nikky Barnes stepped to the service line. Lehigh would get point 14 on an attack error by the Lions, and then the last of Michelle Schwendenmann’s 17 kills gave the Mountain Hawks their first win.

“We started playing more as a team,” said freshman setter Kathleen Lafferty. “We were talking to each other and playing with a lot of energy.”

Senior Jill Racketa chipped in with 11 kills and 14 digs. Cassie Ligh led Columbia with 14 kills.

In the opening match of the tournament North Carolina State defeated Marist 3-0. Game scores were 30-27, 30-19 and 30-24. Emily Bertrand and Stefani Eddins recorded 11 kills apiece for the Wolfpack.

Action continues at the 7th Annual Mountain Hawk Classic on Saturday. Columbia faces NC State at 10:30 followed by Lehigh and Marist at 1:00. In the evening session Marist meets Columbia and Lehigh hosts NC State.
