Newark, DE – The Mountain Hawks took their revenge Wednesday night in impressive fashion, beating Delaware 5-2 after losing a 1-0 decision last season.
In an outstanding effort by the Lehigh offense, the Mountain Hawks (4-1-1) scored three goals in the first half and added two more in the second, besting in one game their entire goal output on the season.
Steve Fisher, Lehigh's leading returning goal scorer from last season, got the offense started early in the first half with a header off a beautiful cross from defender Jose Larin. He then assisted Peter Classi on a goal just a few minutes later. Freshman Maciek Serafin then dented the net for his first time in a Mountain Hawk uniform, scoring on a breakaway off a tremendous lead pass from Classi.
Delaware came back in the second half, getting two goals from Matt Haney off free kicks, but junior netminder Sam Bishop made a diving save on a penalty kick that kept the Blue Hens (2-3-1) from getting any closer.
Coach Dean Koski said this was an important win for the team. "Delaware has always been a tough match for us," said Koski. "To beat a regional team on the road like this, it's great. And it was especially important to get some production from our forwards. We really needed to get them going, and they certainly did in this game."
Lehigh will return to action on Sunday as they stay on the road to take on James Madison. Game time is set for 2:00.
