Lehigh done with camp, ready for Temple

Following a long, grueling preseason camp, Lehigh is set to begin the 2004 season on Saturday afternoon as the Mountain Hawks travel to Philadelphia to take on Temple.  In her second season as head coach, Julie Mazer has high hopes for the season and is excited to get underway.  “Preseason camp went well.  The team arrived to preseason prepared for the long training sessions and worked hard throughout camp. We are working through some injuries right now, but we will be ready for Temple.  Our intensity level and skill level have increased significantly and we are looking forward to the season.”

With 17 players returning from last season, the Mountain Hawks have a good deal of experience to choose from.  The defense figures to be one of the strongest parts of this year’s team, while the offense should come into its own following a few games.

Senior tri-captain Jeanine Hoff has been working hard with her teammates and is ready to get after it on Saturday.  “Everyone came into camp very fit, ready to work hard and prepare for the season. Camp gave us a lot of time to gel as a solid unit and bond.  We are now prepared to take on Temple as if it was our first Patriot League game, using the momentum and camaraderie we have developed through the spring, the summer, and this preseason, and come out with our first win.”

On Tuesday, the Patriot League released its preseason poll, and defending champion American was picked to win the league, while the Mountain Hawks were picked to finish sixth.  Coach Mazer offers her views on the preseason prognostications: “With our previous records, I expected to be placed low in the poll.  Until we show the league what we are truly capable of, we won't move up in the rankings.  The past is the past.  However, this is a new team, with new faces, and a new sense of what kind of team we can be and we are looking forward to league competition this year.”

The contest versus Temple is scheduled to begin at 12:00 on Saturday afternoon.  Lehigh has defeated the Owls in each of the last two seasons, including a 1-0 victory last year at the Ulrich Sports Complex.
