James dominates Lehigh in 6-0 victory for Nebraska

Lincoln, NE – The Mountain Hawks kept it close for the first three innings on Thursday in the NCAA Tournament against Nebraska, but the Cornhuskers used a four-run fourth to jump ahead and defeat Lehigh 6-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.  Peaches James, the Big 12 Pitcher of the Year for Nebraska, struck out 12 batters and gave up just two hits in combining on the shutout of the Mountain Hawks.

Starter Emily Ling matched James zero for zero into the fourth, when the Huskers (43-15) finally got it going. Jessica Yoachim coaxed a one-out walk, and Nicole Tromboli followed that with a two-run shot to right that would prove to be the game winner.  Nebraska would add two more runs in the innings, both coming on an RBI double by James.

Lehigh (40-16-2) would get its first base hit in the fifth, as freshman Lauren Haney finally caught up to a James’ pitch for a single to left, but the Mountain Hawks could muster little else.  Jessica Young and Shana Treon each had base hits for Lehigh.

Nebraska would add two more runs in the sixth thanks to a couple base hits and two errors by the Lehigh defense. Emily Ling went 4 innings in taking the loss (15-5), giving up four runs on four hits while striking out 5.  Kate Arico pitched the last two innings in relief.

The Mountain Hawks will play later Thursday night around 9:00pm ET against No. 3 seed Florida Atlantic, the losers of a 6-1 final to the No. 6 seed Creighton Blue Jays.  Nebraska will move on to face Creighton on Friday in the winner’s bracket.
