Breaks go against Lehigh in close loss to Army

4/3/2004 12:00:00 AM | Men's Tennis

West Point, NY – Lehigh pushed Army to the limit on Saturday, but fell short in a 6-1 loss to the Black Knights in a Patriot League affair.  Though nearly every match featured at least a tie-break, the Army team was able to go 4-0 in them to help hand the Mountain Hawks their third straight defeat to start Patriot League play.

In doubles, Army took all three sets by close scores to win the doubles point. Head coach Dave Shook switched the lineups up a little to try to shake things up, but to no avail. Randall Smalley and Alfredo Fernandez-Concha lost in the top flight 8-4 to John Sabia and Rafael Albornoz. Ty Elser and Brad Nelson were the combo at the second flight, and played close before losing 9-7. Jon Swanson and Ryan Lloyd also lost in the third set 8-5.

In singles, Randall Smalley got the only victory on the afternoon for Lehigh, defeating Albornoz 6-4, 7-5 in the second flight. Fernandez-Concha played a three setter in the fifth flight, taking the first set 6-4 from Sebastian Salas before losing the last two 6-4, 6-3. Esler, Nelson, and Lloyd all reached tiebreaks in one of their sets before losing in each.

Lehigh now sits at 7-6, 0-3 on the season, while Army improved to 13-6, 3-1. The Mountain Hawks will try to reverse their three-match slide on April 8, as they welcome the visiting Bucknell Bison into the Lewis Tennis Center.
