Lehigh splits with St. Joes to end regular season

4/28/2004 12:00:00 AM | Softball

Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh wrapped up the regular season on Wednesday, splitting a doubleheader against St. Joseph’s in the home finale at Kaufman Field.  The Mountain Hawks roughed up the St. Joe’s pitching staff in the first game, winning 9-1 in five innings.  But St. Joe’s came back, plating six in the second game to win by a final of 6-4.

In the first game, Emily Ling returned triumphantly to the mound after missing the last couple weeks with an injury.  Ling pitched five solid innings, giving up just one run on six hits while striking out three to earn her 13th victory of the season (13-4).

Offensively, Lehigh scored all of their runs in two big innings, plating four runs in the second and five runs in fourth. In the second, Mendy Martin drove in two runs with an RBI-double, then scored herself on an RBI triple by Shana Treon.  Treon would also score on a single by Erin Hengemuhle.

In the fourth the Mountain Hawks got on track again, with the big hit a bases loaded double by Lauren Haney that cleared the bases.

In the second game, St. Joseph’s turned the tables, getting four early runs against Lehigh starter Heather Hamasaki. Lehigh’s defense committed two errors in the frame, allowing all four runs to come in unearned.

Hamasaki (9-9) took the loss, giving up a season-high 6 runs, though just one was earned.  She also struck out one in four innings pitched. The Mountain Hawks would chip away at the lead, scoring two in the third, and one in each of the fifth and sixth innings, but the early hole was just too much to overcome.

Lauren Haney was again the key for the offense, going 2-4 with 2 RBIs in the second game. Haney finished the day with 5 RBIs overall. Martin, Jessica Young, and Hengemuhle each had two hits in the ballgame in the losing effort.

The Mountain Hawks finish the season 37-15-2, while St. Joe’s moves to 16-24.

Lehigh will be back in action on Saturday, as they get an early start to the Patriot League tournament at Kaufman Field with a 9:00am game against the No. 4 seed Bucknell Bison. Lehigh swept the Bison in a four game series at Kaufman earlier this season.
