EIWA Championships

Record-setting day for Lehigh grapplers at EIWAs

3/6/2004 12:00:00 AM | Men's Wrestling

Philadelphia, PA – Saturday’s wrestling at the EIWA Championships went about as well as Lehigh could have expected.  The Mountain Hawks set a new school record, sending nine wrestlers into the semifinals on Sunday.  The team dominated in nearly every bout, claiming bonus points in 16 of 19 victories through the first two rounds. Lehigh also holds the team lead, as they continue to shoot for their third straight EIWA title.

Mario Stuart led off for Lehigh, defeating American’s Matt Pelligrino and Andy Henry of Army both by tech falls. Matt Ciasulli was up next at 133, and was one of two Lehigh wrestlers to get two pins on the day. Ciasulli took down Eric Levine (American) in 1:40, and then dropped Steve Sutton (Columbia) in 2:21.

After a bye through the first round, top seed Cory Cooperman at 141 scored an impressive 15-0 tech fall shutout over Patrick Simpson from Army.

At 149, Matt Anderson started out the day with only his second pin on the year (3:47 over Princeton’s Matt Piselli), and then defeated Navy’s John Cox 9-6 to get through to the semis.  Anderson faces a tough challenge there, as he will face off against top-ranked Jesse Jantzen of Harvard.

Derek Zinck took a bye in the first round at 157, then defeated Michael Carbonaro from Navy 9-3 to stay on track for a repeat EIWA crown. At 165, returning champion Troy Letters wasted very little time getting started, as he pinned Dwayne Hash-Barberis of American in 1:03.  Though he would not get a second pin on the day, he did take a tech fall in beating East Stroudsburg’s Keith Smith 22-7.

Brad Dillon was the other Lehigh wrestler with a pair of falls, pinning Adam Santee (Brown) in 3:56 and Sven Hafemeister (Columbia) in 1:37 at 174.  At 184, Travis Frick had the lightest workload, getting a bye into the quarters and then winning by injury default over PJ Jones of Harvard, who had to retire with a potential head injury.

At 197, Matt Cassidy moved into the semis thanks to a major decision 14-3 win over Brown’s Peter Mosely and then eeked out a 5-4 defeat of Todd Wisman of Army, the closest win for the Mountain Hawks on the day.

Paul Weibel was the only Lehigh wrestler to move to the consolation bracket after the first round, losing 9-0 to the top seed Matt Feast from Penn.  He showed no ill effects though, pinning Bart Seeman of Columbia in 2:54, and then avenging an earlier loss this season to Matt Bogumil of Cornell, beating him 8-7.

“We did exactly what we came here to do today,” said Lehigh head coach Greg Strobel. “All of our seeded wrestlers won, and (Paul) Weibel made a good comeback after a tough draw. So far, I think we are doing what we are supposed to be doing, and I like our chances to keep it going tomorrow.”

Overall, Lehigh holds a 14.5 point lead going into the final day of wrestling, and is on track to take the school’s third consecutive EIWA team title.  Host Penn is currently in second, with Cornell just behind them.

The EIWA semifinal matches begin on Sunday at 11:00 am, with the finals set for 5:30 pm.  The finals will be broadcast live on 1230/1160 WEEX, as well as on Lehigh’s website at www.lehighsports.com.  Coverage will begin at 5:05.
