Pitching dominates again as Lehigh sweeps Delaware

Newark, DE – The Mountain Hawks pitching continues to be the story as Lehigh wrapped up its pre-Patriot League slate on Wednesday.  The team’s pitching staff combined to give up just one run in 14 innings as they swept the University of Delaware 4-0 and 3-1, running the team’s record to 19-6-1 on the season.

Emily Ling (7-1), fresh off being named Patriot League Pitcher of the Week, showed no signs of slowing down in the first game, striking out 11 Blue Hens and giving up just two hits in completing her third complete game shutout in as many starts. Ling hasn’t given up an earned run in her last four starts, spanning 28 innings.

Lehigh’s offense was efficient, capitalizing on two errors by the Delaware defense to score four runs in the first five innings.  The big hit was a bases-loaded single by Mary Wieder in the top of the fifth, scoring two runs to put the game out of reach.

In the second game, the Mountain Hawks supported starter Kate Arico, plating two runs in the fourth on a couple of singles by Shana Treon and and Jessica Young.  Delaware got back within a run in the bottom of the sixth, as Heather Hamasaki hit Jenny Gilkins with a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 2-1. Hamasaki persevered though, striking out Lauren Gardener to end the inning.

Lehigh would add an insurance run in the top of the 7th with an RBI single from Whitney Schenbeck to score Young and put the game out of reach. Hamasaki then retired the side in the bottom of the inning for her second save on the season.

Arico (6-1) pitched five and a third innings for the win, giving up only one run on seven hits.

The Mountain Hawks begin their Patriot League season on Saturday, as they travel to West Point for a weekend series with Army. The Saturday doubleheader begins at 2:30.
