Washington, D.C. – After 110 minutes of scoreless play, Lehigh and Bucknell headed for a shootout at Reeves Field on Friday morning and in the end, it was the Mountain Hawks coming away with a 6-5 victory in the shootout to move onto Sunday’s Patriot League Championship.
Freshman Joe Clemente scored the game-winning goal as Lehigh, ranked fourth in the Mid-Atlantic Region, improved to
12-6-2 on the season, while the Bison end their season at 7-9-4.
Lehigh showed why it has the fifth best goals against average in America on Friday as the Brown and White limited Bucknell to just nine shots on the day and kept its opponent out of the goal. Freshman Charlie Sales stopped two Bucknell shots, while Joey Kuterbach sent back six Lehigh attempts for the game. Lehigh had nine shots on the day and was whistled for offsides five times. Junior Adam Williamson, who was named to the Patriot League’s First-Team on Thursday, led Lehigh with four shots on the day. Williamson, Kyle Hartman, Jim Stevens, Patrick Starsinic, John O’Reilly and Clemente were the Mountain Hawk players that scored in the shootout.
There were 32 fouls called during the match and four cards handed out, all to Bucknell. The Bison had seven corner kicks to the Mountain Hawks two.
Lehigh returns to action on Sunday at one versus top-seed and host American. Lehigh fell to American by a score of 1-0 earlier in the season on an own goal in the final 35 seconds of the match. The game will be broadcast live on Lehigh’s website at lehighsports.com.
