Lehigh falls to American in championship game

11/14/2004 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer

Washington, D.C. – Lehigh and American battled through regulation and into overtime when the Eagles received a goal from Garth Juckem at the 91:09 mark off of a feed from Shawn Kuykendall lifting American to a dramatic 1-0 victory in the 2004 Patriot League Championship.  American moves onto the NCAA tournament with a record of 14-5-2, while the setback drops Lehigh to 12-7-2 overall.  The Mountain Hawks will now have to wait and see if they will be selected to appear in the 48-team postseason tournament.

Freshman Charlie Sales was spectacular in goal for the Mountain Hawks – ranked fourth in the Mid-Atlantic Region – as the Illinois native sent back 12 Eagles shots on the afternoon.  Eagles goal keeper Thomas Meyers stopped three Mountain Hawks shots on a day where the Brown and White had just seven shots compared to American’s 22.  Lehigh had one corner to American’s five, as well as 21 fouls to just five whistled versus the Eagles.  Seniors Kyle Hartman and Brandon Smith both had two shots in the game, possibly their last as members of the Mountain Hawks, while three Eagles had four shots for the game.

The Mountain Hawks will now turn their attention to the television to see their fate.  The NCAA Soccer Selection Show will air on ESPNEWS on Monday, November 15, at 4:00 pm ET.  At that time, the first round match ups will be announced.  Lehigh earned an at-large bid to the postseason party in 2002, earning a first round home match.

If the Mountain Hawks are not fortunate enough to be selected to play on, then Lehigh completes yet another winning season – the Mountain Hawks ninth in a row – which is both a school and Patriot League record.  Lehigh also finishes in the top ten in America in goals against average, as the Mountain Hawks broke the school record for that statistic yet again, as well as tying the mark for most shutouts in a season with ten.
