Late goal by Delaware forces overtime and leads to tie

Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh jumped out to an early lead and dominated play for the first 87 minutes of action, but a late Delaware goal sent the game into overtime, which eventually ended in a 1-1 tie at the Ulrich Sports Complex on Tuesday evening.  With the result, Lehigh goes to 7-3-2 on the season, while the visiting Blue Hens now stand at 3-7-1.

Lehigh got on the board right from the start when senior Kyle Hartman lofted a ball over the Delaware defense that junior Jim Stevens put in the back of the net for his team-leading fifth goal of the season at the 5:50 mark.  The two teams battled evenly for the remainder of the half, with each squad getting off nine shots, but neither Lehigh nor Delaware could find the back of the net, and so the teams retired for halftime with the Mountain Hawks holding a 1-0 lead.

The second half featured much of the same as the first, lots of solid defense and not much offense.  Both teams had several chances to score, but the goal tenders for each team made several key saves and the defenses continually blocked or challenged each and every shot attempt.  The game was physical throughout especially down the stretch as the Blue Hens tried time and time again to even the score and force an overtime period, which they eventually did in the 88th minute when Sal Tadjalli took a pass from Anthony Pezza and ripped it past Lehigh goal keeper Sam Bishop to shock the Mountain Hawks and send the game into an extra session.

Lehigh got off 20 shots on the evening, to Delaware’s 16, and for the game the Mountain Hawks had zero corners compared to the Blue Hen’s four.  In goal for Lehigh, Bishop sent back three shots and then gave way to freshman Charlie Sales in the overtime periods, who registered three saves of his own.  For Delaware, goal keeper, Kyle Haynes stopped 11 shots by the Brown and White on the evening.

Head Coach Dean Koski was disappointed with the result for his Mountain Hawks.  “I am hugely disappointed that we gave up a late goal like we did.  We played below the standard that we have become accustomed to.  I thought senior Elliot Leonard did play one heck of a game for us however.”

Lehigh returns to action on Saturday evening when the Mountain Hawks host Bucknell in a key Patriot League match up.  Game time is slated for 7:00 and all of the action can be heard live on lehighsports.com.
