Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh senior quarterback Chad Schwenk suffered a fractured wrist of his throwing hand on Saturday at Division I-A UConn that will sideline him for the rest of the season. Despite the injury, Schwenk still led Lehigh on an 11-play, 82 yard touchodown drive in the fourth quarter, capped off by a TD pass from Schwenk to tight end Adam Bergen. Schwenk, who had thrown for 1095 yards with ten touchdowns through the first five games, will be replaced in the starting lineup by junior Kyle Keating.
Following Schwenk’s injury, Keating entered the Connecticut game and went 4-for-4 on an eight play, 75 yard drive resulting in a Lehigh touchdown. Last season, Keating started two games under center, both resulting in Mountain Hawks wins. As a quarterback, Keating has completed 17-of-26 passes for 225 yards and four touchdowns. He has also thrown one interception. As Lehigh’s punter over the last two seasons, Keating has averaged over 36 yards per punt, and has placed 24 punts inside the opponent’s 20 yard line.
Schwenk ends his Lehigh playing career having completed 233-of-425 passes (55%) for 2,713 career yards. He threw 21 touchdown passes at Lehigh, and 17 interceptions. Earlier this season, Schwenk became the first Lehigh quarterback since Phil Stambaugh in 1999 to have multiple 300+ yard games in a season when he threw for 302 yards against Holy Cross and 301 in a win at Princeton.
Lehigh returns to action on Saturday, when the Mountain Hawks host Saint Mary’s at Goodman Stadium.
