Lehigh gets big win over American

10/4/2003 9:55:00 AM | Men's Soccer

Washington, D.C. – Lehigh defeated perennial powerhouse American on Saturday afternoon by a score of 2-0. The shutout was the eighth of the season for the Mountain Hawks, putting them only one behind tying the school record, with eight games yet to play. Lehigh now sits at 7-1-2 overall, and 1-0-1 in the Patriot League, while the Eagles fall to 3-6-1 on the season, 0-2-0 in the league.
Lehigh, ranked sixth in the Mid-Atlantic Region, got on the board when sophomore Kyle Hansen netted his second goal of the season off an assist from junior Ben Gucciardi at the 11:52 mark. The game was tight throughout, and remained a one-goal affair until senior Steve Fisher, who has been on an offensive tear of late, found the back of the net for a team-leading fifth time this season at the 77:10 mark to put the game out of reach.
Junior goalkeeper Sam Bishop stopped six shots on the afternoon to spear head the Mountain Hawk defense, which is the toughest in the Patriot League. Lehigh is first in shutouts, goals against average and shutout percentage. The defense is led by senior co-captains Doug Cusick and Wes Roach, and seems to be getting tougher each and every game. Lehigh has now shut out its last four opponents and has only surrendered a mere three goals all season in 870 minutes of action.
Lehigh was outshot by the Eagles 15-7 on the afternoon and had only three corners compared to American's seven, but it did not matter as the Brown and White capitalized on its scoring chances, while American became the latest victim of the masterful Lehigh defense. Fisher and sophomore Peter Classi led Lehigh with two shots on goal apiece.
Lehigh returns to action on Tuesday when the Mountain Hawks host UMKC from the Ulrich Sports Complex. Game time is slated for 7:00 and can be heard on Lehigh's website.
