Lehigh still searching for first win at Leeman-Turner

Bethlehem, PA – In a seesaw affair, the Mountain Hawks could never quite get in front and eventually lost a close one 3-2 (24-30, 30-26, 23-30, 30-22, 14-16) to visiting Navy.  The Midshipmen won the first, third, and fifth games to split the season series at one apiece.

The fifth game encapsulated the entire evening.  Lehigh (14-10, 5-4) ran out to a 4-0 lead, before Navy (7-13, 3-5) rallied to serve for the match at 14-10.  However, the Mountain Hawks held strong and tied it up at 14 before falling 16-14. Ashley VanHartesvelt was spectacular for Navy, tallying 32 kills on the evening, the most given up by Lehigh to an opponent this year.

Head coach Patrick Nicholas tipped his cap to Navy’s effort. “They wanted it more,” he said. “They came out with a lot of heart and aggression, and just kept it up all night. They had a lot of broken plays, but were just able to repeatedly find a way to score against us.  It was a tough loss.  We have the talent, we still just have to figure out a way to put it all together.”

Freshman Michelle Schwendenmann had a top-notch effort for the second straight night, tying her career high with 18 kills in addition to 10 digs. Allison Jack had a great all-around performance as well, nearly notching a triple-double with 57 assists, 12 digs, and 6 kills. Jeannette Singleton had 16 kills on the night, registering a milestone on the way as she moved into third place all-time in career kills.  She now has 1,307 in her career, just 29 away from second.

The Mountain Hawks have now dropped three straight matches on the season.  They will be back in action next Thursday night at 7:00, as they continue to seek their first win at the newly refurbished Leeman-Turner Arena in Grace Hall.  The match will be broadcast on Service Electric TV, and an audio broadcast can be heard live on Lehigh’s website at www.lehighsports.com.
