Lehigh rebounds with win over Retrievers

Baltimore, MD – Lehigh bounced back from yesterday’s loss against American, and defeated UMBC 2-1 on Sunday afternoon. In the second of three straight road games, the Mountain Hawks scored two early goals and then held on for the big road win. Lehigh is now 6-8 on the season, and the Retrievers go to 1-9.
Senior Blaire Goodwin knocked in her tenth goal of the season off an assist from fellow senior Kirsten Wyche just five minutes into the game and Lehigh grabbed the early 1-0 lead. The game then went the rest of the first half with not much offensive action. Junior Jeanine Hoff started in goal and picked up one save on the afternoon for the Mountain Hawks.
Lehigh came out and again scored early in the second half, this time at the 38:32 mark, as sophomore Marissa Iannarone scored off of a rebound and the Brown and White were ahead 2-0. The Mountain Hawk defense then shut down the Retrievers until 20 minutes remained in the contest and Julie Moore netted her fourth goal of the season. UMBC could not get any closer as Lehigh wrapped up the important road win. Sophomore Meghan Gove picked up four saves in the second half Lehigh.
Head Coach Julie Mazer was excited with the way her team bounced back after American handled the Mountain Hawks rather easily on Saturday. “We were able to shut out what happened yesterday and focus on the task on hand. We scored early in both halves, and had opportunities to score even more, but it was good to get this win.” Mazer adds, “We had very good passing today and great stick handling. This is a good character win for our team.”
Lehigh returns to action on Wednesday when the Mountain Hawks travel to Washington, D.C. to take on the Georgetown Hoyas. Game time is set for 3:30.
