Judy Dwyer was named head coach of the Lehigh women’s golf team on June 15, 2012. The announcement marks a return to Lehigh for Dwyer, a long-time member of Saucon Valley Country Club, as she previously served as an assistant coach for the Mountain Hawks from 2008 to 2010.
"I am very excited to be working with Lehigh University and in particular this women’s golf team," Dwyer said. "A couple of years ago I was an assistant coach when Natalie Lansing and Co-captains Chelsea Michalek and Ginette Schapira were freshmen. It’s a dream come true to have another opportunity to lead the Mountain Hawks."
Dwyer is a five-handicap and has over 30 years of regional and national playing experience. She has captured 12 Club Championships in her career, spanning three different clubs: Saucon Valley Country Club, Lehigh Country Club in Allentown, and the Lost Tree Club in North Palm Beach, Florida. Dwyer has won past club championships at both Saucon Valley CC and the Lost Tree Club. She has played in events hosted by associations including the Eastern Women’s Golf Association, the USGA, the Pennsylvania State Women’s Golf Association, and the Women’s Golf Association of Philadelphia. Dwyer was an alternate for the 2010 U.S. Senior Women’s Open and has played in several national events in Florida as well.
Dwyer served on the Executive Board for the Pennsylvania State Women’s Golf Association from 2008-2011 and has extensive experience working with various golf committees at Saucon Valley C.C. Among her duties, Dwyer served as a rules official for the State Women’s Amateur and ran a Junior Clinic at the 2009 U.S. Women’s Open at Saucon Valley C.C. that drew more than 100 junior golfers. She also serves as Executive Board Director for the Women’s TransNational, which is one of largest national women’s golf amateur tournaments in the world.
Saucon Valley Country Club is where Dwyer’s coaching career began as she served as an assistant coach for six years with the SVCC’s Junior Colonial Golf Team for junior girls and boys 18 and under. Dwyer’s daughter Katie played collegiately at Georgetown and served as a team captain for the Hoyas.
Dwyer also assisted the Georgetown women’s golf team as a practice player and volunteer assistant travel coach. In her first stint at Lehigh, Dwyer helped lead the Mountain Hawks to a first-place finish in the five-team Kutztown Invitational in 2008 and a second-place finish at the 2008 Rutgers Invitational. Lehigh also tied for second at the 2009 ECAC Championship, while Dwyer guided the Mountain Hawks through a head coaching change in the 2010 spring season. Dwyer spent the 2011-12 school year as the women’s golf coach at the Benjamin School in Jupiter, Florida.
"We are delighted that Judy is returning to lead our women's golf program," said Bill Griffin, Lehigh’s Associate Athletic Director for External Relations and Advancement, who led the search process. "She is perfectly positioned to build on earlier efforts and help our student-athletes to realize their dreams."
Dwyer takes over a Lehigh program that finished in the top half of four of the nine events the Mountain Hawks competed in, highlighted by their second straight win in the spring-opening Sunshine Spring Classic in Florida. Last week, it was announced following a meeting of the Patriot League Council of Presidents that women’s golf was approved as the league’s 24th varsity sport for the 2012-13 season. Lehigh is currently one of three Patriot League institutions that sponsor varsity women’s golf, along with Bucknell and Holy Cross.
"They have developed into a team determined to improve their standings," Dwyer said about the current Mountain Hawk squad. "I am going to dedicate myself to help them reach their goals and beyond. Practice and fitness are going to be important ingredients to help the team perform at a highest level. The timing is perfect for this strategy, with the Patriot League offering the possibility of a league championship in the spring."
Dwyer is a graduate of Rider University in Lawrenceville, New Jersey and has a BS in Finance. She and her husband successfully own and operate TransEdge Truck Centers with three locations throughout the state of Pennsylvania.
