Mike Benn begins his eighth season with the men’s soccer program and his sixth as Lehigh’s Associate Head Coach. Benn came to Lehigh after serving the prior two years as head coach of East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. Benn played at Lehigh under head coach Dean Koski and has held several positions in the coaching profession, including graduate assistant at Lehigh from 1996-99, assistant coach at East Carolina from 1999-2003 and interim head coach of ECU.
Koski is very pleased to have Benn on board with the Mountain Hawks. "Through the generosity and continued commitment to athletics from Murray H. Goodman ’48, we have added a full-time coaching position to our staff, which in and of itself is great news."
Koski continues, "Having my former captain and assistant coach come back to Lehigh is big news for our program. As a former head coach in Conference USA, Mike brings a wealth of recruiting and coaching experience back to Lehigh and the Patriot League. He is regarded by his peers as an outstanding recruiter and coach."
Benn has also been an assistant coach of the Olympic Development Program (ODP) teams of the North Carolina Olympic Development Program, the head coach of the Greenville Stars U-17 team, and he coached the League Select Program of the Lehigh Valley Youth Soccer League.
A four-year letterwinner at Lehigh, Benn was the captain of the 1995 team and was voted the team’s Scholar Athlete Award winner in both 1994 and 1995. Benn holds coaching certifications from both the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and the United States Soccer Federation.
Benn graduated from Lehigh in 1996 with a degree in history and later earned his MBA from Lehigh in 1998. A native of Delran, New Jersey, Benn is the second former player under Koski on the Mountain Hawks current coaching staff, joining assistant Mike O’Connell ’93.
