Spatny Named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh senior defensive end Matt Spatny has been named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. Spatny was one of the leaders of a Lehigh defense that had a big day in the Mountain Hawks' 31-7 victory at Columbia on Saturday.

In the victory, Lehigh limited the Lions to 42 yards of total offense in the first half and just 39 rushing yards for the game. The Mountain Hawks registered six sacks, nine tackles for loss and two interceptions as they moved to 7-0 on the season.

Spatny recorded six tackles, a career-high three tackles for loss and a pair of sacks in Saturday's victory. On Columbia's first possession of the second half, Spatny recorded a five-yard tackle for loss and a sack as Columbia went three and out. Lehigh got the ball back and scored to go up 31-0 with the Lions dropped down to 32 yards of offense when they began their next possession.

Despite missing two games with an injury, Spatny leads the Mountain Hawks with 8.5 tackles for loss and five sacks this season. He has 14 total tackles.

Senior wide receiver Geoffrey Jamiel received honorable mention recognition from the league on Monday. Jamiel registered a career-high 182 receiving yards Saturday at Columbia, including a highlight-reel, one-handed 45-yard reception and a career-long 63-yard touchdown catch.

The Mountain Hawks enter their bye week ranked seventh in both the Stats Perform FCS Top 25 and the AFCA Coaches Poll.

Lehigh will return to action at Fordham on Saturday, Oct. 25 with game time set for 1 p.m. from Moglia Stadium in the Bronx, N.Y.
