FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Despite holding a 19-8 advantage in shots and an 11-6 advantage in shots on goal, Lehigh men's soccer dropped a 5-0 decision to Sacred Heart Friday night at Campus Field. The Mountain Hawks are now 1-3-1 while the Pioneers improved to 3-1.Â
"Giving up five unanswered goals really put us behind," said head coach Dean Koski. "We just didn't do a great job of attacking in the box. Sacred Heart was efficient in creating tonight, and we were creating chances, but we just have to do a better job at attacking in the box."
David Gallego Garci opened the scoring 18 minutes into the game and Sacred Heart would control the momentum from there. The Pioneers added two more quick goals after Ivan Morcillo scored a brace with goals in the 24th and the 27th minutes. Sam McCann netted a goal in the 29th minute to put Sacred Heart up 4-0 at halftime and Brady Poor scored the fifth and final goal of the game in the 67th minute.Â
While Lehigh outshot Sacred Heart, Luca Marinelli was a big reason why the Pioneers went home with the win as he tallied nine saves. Although Marinelli registered nine saves, the Pioneers recorded a total of 11 saves on Friday as they also tallied two team saves after Sacred Heart made a couple of goal-line clearances.
Lehigh senior goalkeeper Blake Koski started in net, recording the first and only save for the Mountain Hawks in the first half. Senior goalkeeper Ryan Gross played all 45 minutes in net in the second half but did not record a save.
Not only did Lehigh have an edge in shots, but the Mountain Hawks also had a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks. Junior midfielder Yusef Gueye recorded a game-high of four shots.
The Mountain Hawks return home to the Ulrich Sports Complex on Tuesday to host Vermont at 6 p.m. Tuesday's game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
