Lehigh Closes Fall Semester With Strong Sheridan Tournament

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Coming out of the final exam break, the Lehigh wrestling team enjoyed a strong showing Friday at the Sheridan Tournament at Stabler Arena. Twenty-one active Mountain Hawks took to the mats Friday with Lehigh wrestlers claiming titles in five weight classes, plus two other Lehigh versus Lehigh finals bouts were not contested. In all, 13 of the 21 Mountain Hawks in action earned top four places.

Lehigh's five individual champions Friday were sophomore Ryan Crookham (133), senior Malyke Hines (149), senior Max Brignola (165) competing unattached, sophomore Rylan Rogers (174) and junior JT Davis (197).

Junior Sheldon Seymour and true first-year Mason Ziegler reached the finals at 125 but a bout was not contested. Similarly, there was a no contest at 157 between deferred first-year Griffin Gonzalez and true first-year Logan Rozynski.

Seymour won two bouts by technical fall and picked up a 9-5 decision over Indiana's Blaine Frazier in a rematch of last year's Sheridan final to reach the title bout, while Ziegler had one of Lehigh's most impressive wins of the day, knocking off Indiana's 22nd-ranked Jacob Moran in the semifinals 4-3. An early first period takedown was the difference for Ziegler, who added a third period escape compared to two escapes and a stalling point for Moran.

Also at 125, first-year Logan Wadle went 2-2, beating Franklin & Marshall's Vincent Gioffre 14-0 for his first career victory.

Crookham improved to 5-0 on the season with a pair of major decision victories followed by a 10-5 decision over Indiana's 27th-ranked Angelo Rini. In the finals, In the title bout, Crookham scored a pair of first-period takedowns and added one in the third.

All four Lehigh entrants at 149 reached the semifinals, with Hines, in his debut up a weight class, edging senior Drew Munch 8-7 in one semifinal and sophomore Kelvin Griffin pinning first-year Matt Repos for his third fall of the day in the other. In the all-Lehigh final, Hines reversed Griffin late in the second period and erased Griffin's riding time advantage before Griffin was able to escape in the third to win 2-1.

Munch and Repos both went 1-2 in Friday's action.

Lehigh had four entries at 157 with three reaching the semifinals. Rozynski's day begain with back-to-back major decision victories before rallying for a 10-4 decision over Virginia's Nick Sanko in the semifinals. Gonzalez met first-year teammate Jadon Skellenger in the other semifinal and won 4-1 with a takedown in sudden victory. Skellenger completed a 4-1 day by beating Sanko 8-2 to claim third place.

Junior Zac Martin went 3-2, dropping a 2-1 decision to Skellenger in the consolation semifinals.

Lehigh also had four entrants at 165, with Brignola capturing his third tournament title of the fall semester with an 8-5 win over Indiana's Tyler Lillard. In the semifinals, Brignola posted a technical fall over first-year Dom Federici, the only blemish in a 4-1 day for Federici, who won by major decision in his first two bouts and beat Drexel's Dom D'Agostino 5-3 to claim third place.

Senior Thayne Lawrence and sophomore Owen Quinn also competed at 165 for the Mountain Hawks.

Rylan Rogers advanced to the finals at 174 with wins by decision over Virginia's Michael Murphy and Indiana's Nick South. Rogers turned up the scoring in the finals, scoring a takedown in each period plus an escape and riding time in an 11-2 major decision over Conner O'Donnell of Brown.

Sophomore Liam Gil-Swiger also competed at 174 for Lehigh.

Davis climbed out of an early 4-0 hole to claim the title at 197. Facing Gabe Sollars of Indiana in the finals, Davis trailed 4-0 in the second period after a late Sollars takedown in the first and early Sollars escape in the second. Late in the second period, Davis scored his first takedown to trail just 5-3 after two periods. After an escape early in the third, Davis scored the go-ahead takedown with 33 seconds remaining and after a late Sollars escape, claimed a one-point victory.

At 184, sophomore Caden Rogers battled back from a heartbreaking 5-1 semifinal defeat in the tiebreakers to take third place, with a 4-1 record on the day. Rogers won his first two bouts by technical fall and defeated Brown's Andrew Reall 4-0 in the third place bout.

Junior Carter Bailey was Lehigh's lone representative at 141, going 2-2 on the day.
The Mountain Hawks will return to dual competition in January with visits to EIWA foe Binghamton (Jan. 11) and longtime rival Cornell (Jan. 12).
