BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team opened the 2023 season with a 5-2 loss to Ohio State on Friday evening.

The Mountain Hawks were led by sophomores Zoe Day and Maddie Kandra who each netted a goal. The Buckeyes had five different goal-scorers in Leanne Bough, Claudia Thomas, Delaney Lawler, Brenna Bough and Anne Marie Krebs.

Lehigh struck first in the contest at 10:23, with Day capitalizing on a rebound on a corner. An Ohio State defender cleared the ball off the goalkeeper's pads following the initial shot, but Day collected the ball and put it away to give Lehigh a 1-0 lead.

Ohio State responded with two goals to wrap up the first quarter as Lawler and Thomas gave the Buckeyes the lead.

Krebs netted the Buckeyes' third goal in the half to give Ohio State a 3-1 lead at intermission.

Nine minutes into the second half, senior Julia Gatelein had the opportunity to convert on a penalty stroke, but Buckeye goalkeeper Abby Trainer made a diving save.

With less than a minute remaining in the third, Bough put her name in the books off an assist from Lawler, giving Ohio State a 4-1 lead.

Day swept the ball to the far post, but Trainer disrupted the pass as Kandra connected on the end of it for Lehigh's second goal.

With 5:11 remaining in the game, Bough scored the final goal as Ohio State secured the 5-2 victory.

Junior goalkeeper Jenny Canoni played all 60 minutes, recording six saves and allowing five goals. Ohio State's Trainer made five saves.

The Mountain Hawks return to Ulrich Field on Sunday at 1 p.m. to play host to Ball State.
