Mountain Hawks Lead SMSU Spring Classic After First 18 Holes

LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. – The Lehigh women's golf team carded a score of 311 in the opening round of the SMSU Spring Classic Monday on the Wigwam Resort Blue Course. Three members of Lehigh's scoring team shot in the 70s Monday and sit in the top 10 individually heading into Tuesday's final round.
 
First-year Yuki Zhu led Lehigh on Monday, shooting two over par 74 that included five birdies. Zhu sits in second place, one stroke behind Emily Shimkus of Colorado-Colorado Springs. Sophomore Madison Pineda is one stroke behind Zhu with a 75. Pineda sits in third place and made two birdies in her opening round.
 
The third Lehigh player in the top 10 is first-year Evelyn Wong, who is tied for seventh place after shooting 79. Wong made consecutive birdies on the 10th and 11th holes. '
 
The other two members of Lehigh's scoring team are tied for 17th place as junior Meghna Grover and senior Hannah Foster both shot 83. Grover made one birdie while Foster carded two.
 
Three other Mountain Hawks competed as individuals, led by senior Iris Shin, who shot 77 and sits in fourth place. Shin's opening round included two birdies. Sophomore Sophie Chang shot 93 and sits in 43rd place while senior Marina Mendez sits in 51st place after a 98.
 
Lehigh leads MSU Denver by 10 strokes, while Bucknell sits in third place, 11 shots behind the Mountain Hawks.
 
The SMSU Spring Classic concludes Tuesday with the final round. Lehigh's individuals will tee off beginning at 8:39 a.m. MST, while its scoring team will go off at 9:06 a.m. alongside MSU Denver and Bucknell.
