Lehigh Makes History in 106-60 Win Versus La Salle

12/7/2023 10:56:00 PM | Women's Basketball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Everything was falling for the Lehigh women's basketball team as the Mountain Hawks made history, scoring 106 points, which marked a single-game record for most posts in a game, in a 106-60 win over La Salle Thursday night at Stabler Arena.

"It feels so good," said junior guard Ella Stemmer. "We share the ball so well, and we did a lot of little things. The second half kind of slipped away from us for a little, but we pulled it back together and scored 106 points. It's incredible to be a part of this."

The Mountain Hawks improved to 8-1 to match the best start to a season since 2014-15, while the Explorers dropped to 3-6.

Not only did Lehigh set a record for most points scored in a single game, but the Mountain Hawks also netted 17 three-pointers, which tied the Patriot League single-game record.

"It's what we do," said head coach Addie Micir. "We share it and shoot it, so when the opportunity presents itself to knock down shots, we do, and we shot a high percentage to get there too, which I"m proud of."

Lehigh was 17-of-41 (41.5%) from downtown on Thursday.

The Mountain Hawks previously made 17 three-pointers against Loyola on Feb. 19, 2022.

Ella Stemmer, who had a career-high of 33 points, recorded six three-pointers, which was also a career-high. Lily Fandre also had a career-high night. The sophomore had 22 points and hit five three-pointers, which were both personal bests. Fandre also corralled a game-high of eight rebounds.

Meghan O'Brien also finished in double figures. O'Brien had 13 points. Maddie Albrecht and Whitney Lind were one point away from double figures as the duo both finished with nine points. Remi Sisselman had eight points and seven rebounds.

Colleen McQuillen got the three-point party started early on. McQuillen connected from beyond the arc just 36 seconds into the game, and Lehigh would hold the lead for the remainder of the contest. McQuillen finished the game with a game-high of nine assists.

Lehigh went on a 13-3 run with just four minutes remaining in the first frame to take a 28-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Mountain Hawks continued to pick up the pace in the second quarter as they went on a 5-0 run to open the quarter. Lehigh's defense limited La Salle to just four made shots in the second quarter.

Lehigh outscored La Salle 22-11 to take a 50-23 lead at halftime.

Despite being up by 27 points at halftime, Lehigh would not back down. Stemmer hit another three to open up the second half just seven seconds into the third quarter. While the Mountain Hawks would continue to hold a lead, the third quarter was much closer as Lehigh put up 30 points, while La Salle put up 28.

"La Salle is a good team, and they had a tough stretch of games with playing Virginia and Rutgers, so we wanted to push pace and test their legs a little bit, but you have to give them credit," said Micir. "They came out in the third quarter and weren't going to lay down. They came out and shot a lot of threes. I love how this team responds and celebrates each other."

Lehigh once again took control and owned the fourth quarter. The Mountain Hawks defense limited the Explorers to a quarter low of nine points in the final frame while they put up 26 points. Lehigh ended the game on a 5-0 run.

First-year Julianna Ouimette helped make history for Lehigh as she scored the game's final four points, which would end up giving Lehigh the record for most points in a game. The previous record was was 103, which was last set in 1977 when the Mountain Hawks scored 103 points against Albright.

Nicole Melious led the way for La Salle with 16 points.

Lehigh held a 54-35 advantage on the boards.

The Mountain Hawks will head west to take on Pitt on Sunday at 2 p.m.
