Lehigh Drops 2-1 Decision at Penn

9/4/2022 5:27:00 PM | Women's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Coming off of its first tie of the season last Thursday, the Lehigh women's soccer team fell to Penn in a 2-1 battle in Philadelphia on Sunday afternoon. The first half featured all three goals of the game, with both defenses taking control throughout the second half.

"I think the Thursday-Sunday turnaround is a tough one but Penn did the same thing so, it's a learning opportunity for when your legs feel heavy in the first ten, twenty when it's warm outside," said head coach Lauren Calabrese. "How do you play smarter? Part of that is communicating with your teammates and understanding what the game plan is and staying locked in.

"It's really all about mental focus and mental tenacity so for us moving forward, some of the mistakes we made, we'll be looking at film as a teaching tool but I think a lot of it is within our control."

The Mountain Hawks and Quakers opened up the first half alternating possession, with both teams fighting to be the first to get on the board. In the eighth minute, Penn began to find its rhythm, leading to a goal from Lauren Teuschl.

The Quakers continued to maintain possession but Lehigh showed no signs of backing down. In the 17th minute, Lehigh gained possession and quickly moved the ball up the field. Senior Mattie Murphy tied the game 1-1 with an unassisted shot from just outside the 18-yard box.

"Mattie Murphy's been an incredibly consistent player this season," said Calabrese. "I think she's a player that leads by example through her work habits and her work ethic so, getting that goal, it was coming and I think it was long overdue for her. Again, I think it's a testament to how she works and I think it's well respected across the team. I think it serves as a really great model for what we strive to play as individuals and also collectively for everybody on our team."

Both teams continued to battle for the next 15 minutes following Murphy's goal. In the 32nd minute, Penn's Mallory Lucas scored the final goal of the game to secure the Quakers' 2-1 lead.

Lehigh had a surge of offense to end the half, led by senior Chloe Sherman, who put up two shots in the final five minutes. Sherman's first shot bounced off of Penn goalkeeper Laurence Gladu's hand before hitting the crossbar and leading to a Lehigh corner.

Similar to Thursday's game against Delaware, the Mountain Hawks came out of halftime with a fresh offensive intensity. During the second half, Lehigh doubled its shots on goal while limiting Penn to just five shots in 45 minutes.

Sophomore Corinne Lyght put up three shots for Lehigh in the second half, including back-to-back shots in the 52nd and 54th minute. Gladu put up a wall of defense in net for Penn, eliminating any chance of the Mountain Hawks' tying the game.

Penn led Lehigh in shots 16-11 but first-year goalkeeper Maggie Ousouljoglou tallied seven saves for the Mountain Hawks compared to Gladu's five.

"I think going through the experience was really a great way for us to understand how to play tough games like this as we head into league play," Calabrese said of the Thursday-Sunday turnaround. "I think we're learning a lot in terms of how to push ourselves, how to be resilient with what the game demands of us and then understanding the tactical piece is super important for us.

"As we prepare for Siena, it's going to be on turf so the conditions of the game are going to be different and I think again, really great teaching moments for us to prepare for and learn from."

Lehigh will head to Loudonville, N.Y. to take on Siena at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 8. The Mountain Hawks will return to Bethlehem on Sunday, Sept. 11 where they will face St. John's. Opening kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the game will be streamed on ESPN+.
