
Lehigh Drops League-Opening Match To Lafayette in Four Sets

EASTON, Pa. – Despite a match-high 19 kills from sophomore Megan Schulte, the Lehigh volleyball team fell to rival Lafayette 3-1 in the Patriot League opener for both teams Friday at Kirby Sports Center. The Leopards out-hit Lehigh by a .194-.117 margin and hit over .200 in all three sets that they won. Lafayette came from behind to win the third set, breaking a 1-1 tie and then claimed the fourth to close out the match.

The loss drops Lehigh to 8-4 while Lafayette events its record at 4-4.

In set one, Lafayette used an 8-3 run to break a 9-9 tie. The Mountain Hawks could get no closer than three points the rest of the way as Lafayette won the final three points to claim a 25-18 set victory.

Lehigh won the second set 25-21 as the Mountain Hawks build a marginal lead before a 6-0 Lafayette run put the Leopards up 17-15. The Mountain Hawks regained the lead with a 4-0 run that included a pair of double blocks by sophomores Emily Stewart and Gracie Kiser. Lafayette evened the set at 19-19 before Lehigh ran off six of the next eight points, wrapping the set up on a Schulte kill and a Lafayette attack error.

Lafayette won the first three points of set three before Lehigh came back to take a 10-5 lead on a Schulte kill. Â The lead went back and forth as Lafayette used a 7-1 run to take the lead but the Mountain Hawks came back to knot the set at 22-22. The Leopards answered a 3-0 Lehigh run to tie the set with the final three points to win 25-22.

The Leopards raced to a 5-0 lead in set four as Lehigh found itself playing catch-up throughout. Lehigh battled back to 7-6 early in the set but it was as close as the Mountain Hawks would get. A 4-0 run eventually put Lafayette up 18-12. The Leopards closed out the match with a 25-19 set win.

Schulte hit .213 on her 19 kills, and added 12 digs and three service aces, while Stewart added 10 kills, hitting .350, and seven blocks. Sophomore Kyleigh Brown led Lehigh with 16 digs and Kiser added 10 digs. Lehigh had a 12-2 edge in team blocks.

Abby Nieporte had 12 kills to lead Lafayette, while Carol Ulichney and Hannah Ehrich-Pollock both had 11, with Ehrich-Pollock hitting .429.

Lehigh will wrap up its opening Patriot League weekend with a visit to Bucknell Saturday. First serve is set for 2 p.m. with streaming coverage on ESPN+.
