Mountain Hawks Head West To Battle Ball State, No. 22 Ohio State

9/1/2022 9:18:00 AM | Field Hockey

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The second weekend of the Lehigh field hockey season sees the Mountain Hawks head west for two games. Lehigh will begin with a Saturday game in Muncie, Ind., against Ball State before moving on to Columbus, Ohio to battle No. 22 Ohio State on Sunday. Action both days begins at noon, with the Ohio State game to be streamed on BTN+ (subscription required).

The Mountain Hawks are still looking for their first win of 2022. Lehigh battled back from a 3-0 halftime deficit but ultimately fell 3-2 in its season opener against Lock Haven and then dropped a 6-0 final at Temple to close out its opening weekend. Senior Sarah Bonthuis netted Lehigh's second goal against Lock Haven and led the Mountain Hawks with four shots at Temple. Sophomore Eleni Kountroubis scored Lehigh's first goal against Lock Haven with an assist from first-year Maddie Kandra.

Senior Maddie Kahn has made 11 saves over two games in the goal cage for the brown and white.

Ball State is going for its second straight win to open the season. The Cardinals opened with a 2-1 victory over Saint Francis last Friday behind a goal and an assist from Fleur Knopert and a game-winning goal from Maureen Donegan. Ball State went 4-13 last season.

The all-time series between Lehigh and Ball State is tied 2-2. The Mountain Hawks won the most recent meeting, 2-1 in Columbus, Ohio in 2018.

Ohio State is ranked 22nd in the preseason NFHCA Coaches Poll. The Buckeyes are off to a 2-0 start with wins over Northeastern and UAlbany by a combined 7-0 count last weekend in Albany, N.Y. Six different Buckeyes scored goals last weekend with Hallie Borst netting two to lead the way. Ohio State went 7-11 in 2021.

The Buckeyes led the all-time series 2-1. Lehigh won the inaugural meeting 4-0 in 1988 while Ohio State picked up wins at Lehigh in 2017 and in Columbus the following year.

Following the trip west, Lehigh will return to Ulrich Field for two games next weekend. The Mountain Hawks will host La Salle on Friday Sept. 9 at 6 p.m. and then will host Wagner at 11 a.m. on Sunday Sept. 11.
