BOSTON, Ma. - The Lehigh men's soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss to Boston University at Nickerson Field Saturday night.
Lehigh is now 3-9-3 (2-4-2 PL), and the Terriers are 6-4-6 (4-1-3 PL).
It didn't take long for the Terriers to find their first goal of the game when Quinn Matulis found the back of the net just three minutes into the game. Matulis quickly responded with another goal 11 minutes into the game. Those two goals by Matulis were his only two shots of the game, and he connected on both of them.
"We spotted them two goals way too early in a game where we needed to keep it tight," said head coach Dean Koski. "I thought we did a really good job of flipping it a little bit in the second half and creating more chances, and we drew a penalty kick."
Lehigh had its best opportunity of the game when senior Jack Sarkos took a penalty kick in the 75th minute, but it was saved by BU's goalkeeper Francesco Montali.
"I think when we missed the penalty kick, it was really difficult," Koski said. "If we score that penalty kick, it changes the game and puts some pressure on them. Unfortunately, the keeper made a great save, and it was really hard after that."
Montali, who finished the night with three saves and recorded another shutout, leads the Patriot League in goals against average, saves and shutouts per game.
First-year goalkeeper Tommy Chyzowych recorded two saves for Lehigh.
The Terriers changed goalkeepers with eight minutes left so that senior Liam Cullen could make his first appearance of the year on Senior Night. Cullen came up with two saves in eight minutes.
The Mountain Hawks were outshot 7-2 in the first half. Both teams had four shots in the second half.
Nolan Jetter and Sarkos led the way for Lehigh with two shots each.
Lehigh will have its most important game of the season against Colgate at the Ulrich Sports Complex on Wednesday, as the Mountain Hawks must win and get help to clinch a spot in the Patriot League Tournament. Game time is 6 p.m. with streaming coverage on ESPN+.
"We went into this game thinking it was a must-win, and we didn't do well," Koski said. "Wednesday is a home game, and hopefully, that's a little bit to our advantage. We've got two days to prepare. At this point in the season, we are who we are, and we just have to figure it out and hope the guys can show up and put in a good performance."
