Gatelein Tabbed as Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week
10/24/2022 12:03:00 PM | Field Hockey
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh junior Julia Gatelein was selected as the Patriot League Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week, announced Monday afternoon.
Â
The Lehigh field hockey program earned its tenth win of the season with a 3-0 shutout victory over Holy Cross, reaching double-digit wins for back-to-back seasons for the first time 1985-86. The Mountain Hawks have now qualified for the Patriot League Tournament in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2004-2005.Â
Â
Gatelein, who earned her second honor as the Defensive Player of the Week, set herself apart from others and was a crucial part of the defense that shutout Holy Cross on Saturday. She was all over the field and making things difficult for the Crusaders to get passes through the midfield. Gatelein and the Lehigh defense did not allow a single penalty corner in the first half and held the Crusaders to just four in the match.
Â
Seniors Sarah Bonthuis and Maddie Kahn were also named as honorable mentions for their efforts against Holy Cross on Monday.
Â
Bonthuis contributed three points on one goal and an assist. She scored the first goal of the contest after receiving the ball at the top of the circle and blasted a reverse shot into the back of the cage to give Lehigh a 1-0 lead in the first quarter. That marker was her ninth of the season and 24th of her career. In the fourth period, Bonthuis was credited with an assist on a goal that put the Mountain Hawks up 3-0. That assist put Bonthuis in a tie for the single-season assist record, with nine assists. She currently leads the squad in points, goals and assists.
Â
Kahn registered three saves and posted her second shutout of the season and the eighth of her career. In the third quarter, she needed to make a pair of saves to keep it a scoreless match and then made the final save she needed to in the fourth period to record the shutout.
Â
Lehigh (10-6, 3-2 Patriot League) remains in Bethlehem for its final two matches of the regular season as they host Colgate Saturday at 11 a.m. as the Mountain Hawks celebrate Senior Day and will be broadcast on ESPN+. On Sunday, Lehigh concludes its regular-season schedule with a non-league contest against Columbia at 1 p.m.
