Lehigh Earns Five-Set Victory Over Bucknell

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh volleyball team defeated Bucknell in a five-set Patriot League match (25-18, 20-25, 22-25, 25-22, 15-6) in Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall on Saturday evening.
The Mountain Hawks improve to 12-10 on the season and 3-7 in Patriot League action while the Bison fall to 12-8 overall and 5-6 in league play.
After both squads exchanged the first two points each, Lehigh scored the next four to take a 6-2 lead in the first set. Bucknell closed in within two points at 10-8 before the Mountain Hawks tallied four straight points to extend their advantage to six points, 14-8. Lehigh continued to lead by a similar margin for the rest of the set, claiming the first set 25-18 to take a 1-0 edge.
The Bison started in front to begin set two and led 5-3 until Lehigh tied things up. After Bucknell's next point, 6-5, the Mountain Hawks recorded five consecutive points to take a 10-6 lead. But the Bison would put a rally together to knot things up once again at 10-10. Lehigh managed to go regain the lead, however Bucknell strung together four straight points and six of the next eight points to extend the Bison advantage to 20-16. Lehigh pulled within two points, 22-20, before Bucknell took set two and tied the match at 1-1, heading to the third set.
Bucknell opened set three with a couple of points as the Mountain Hawks answered with three points to take a 3-2 advantage. After going back-and-forth with points, Bucknell took a one-point lead at 7-6 before Lehigh tallied six-straight points to go ahead 12-7. The Bison did find a way to claw back and tied things up once more at 14-14 and then extended their edge to 18-15 after four unanswered points. Continuing to battle, Lehigh tied things up at 18-18, but Bucknell inched their way ahead, leading the Mountain Hawks 23-22 before coming away with set three, putting the Bison up 2-1 after three sets.
A strong start to the fourth set for Lehigh had them up over Bucknell 9-2. The Bison continued to fight back and eventually tied the set at 15-15 and then the last time at 19-19, but Lehigh would force a fifth and final set after winning set four 25-22.
The fifth set was all Mountain Hawks after each squad opened with a point each. Lehigh led 5-2 and stretched the advantage to 10-5. Bucknell scored its final point of the contest to put the score at 10-6 before the Mountain Hawks scored five unanswered points to take the set, 15-6, and the match 3-2 over the Bison.
Three different Mountain Hawks reached double figures in kills with first-year Natalie Luscomb and sophomore Megan Schulte finishing the match with 15 kills apiece. Luscomb added two blocks and an assist while hitting .364 while Schulte contributed six blocks, five digs and two assists with a hitting percentage of .231. Sophomore Emily Stewart was the other Mountain Hawk in double-digits for kills, earning 12 kills without committing a single error for a hitting percentage of .500 to go with eight blocks and three digs on the evening.
Lehigh totaled 17 team blocks tonight, led by first year Madison McCartney who made nine blocks to go with four digs and one kill. Stewart finished with eight, Schulte with six, and junior Lylah Washington adding five blocks to go with her nine kills and two digs.
Sophomore Makena Smith paced the Lehigh offense with 41 assists and tied her career-high of seven kills to go with 19 digs and four blocks. Leading the Mountain Hawks in digs was sophomore Kyleigh Brown who contributed 25 digs and nine assists.
Lehigh returns to action tomorrow, Oct. 23, as the Mountain Hawks host Lafayette in The Rivalry Presented by Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute. The match begins at 4 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
