Mountain Hawks Off To Strong Start At Lehigh Invitational

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – It was a strong opening day for the Lehigh men's golf team Friday as the Mountain Hawks opened the Lehigh Invitational on the Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club. All 10 Mountain Hawks shot 77 or better Friday as both Lehigh entrants are within striking distance of the lead entering Saturday's final round.

Lehigh's "B" entry totaled four over par 292 to sit in third place overall, while its "A" team shot 285 and sits in fourth place. Both teams are chasing St. John's, which shot 285 to take a three stroke lead over Rider.

The low round of the day for the Mountain Hawks was turned in by senior Sam Barton, who shot two under par 70 playing for the B team. Barton made six birdies, including four on the back nine, and sits in a tie for second place with two other players, two strokes behind Brendan Smith of St. John's, who carded a 68.

Senior Daniel Song shot even par 72 to lead the A team and that number was matched by first-year Aiden LeBlanc of the B squad. Song made five birdies on the day, while LeBlanc parred 13 of his first 14 holes and birdied two of his final four. Both players are tied for eighth place.

Playing for the A team, first-year Jake Roth was one stroke behind Song and LeBlanc, making three birdies in a round of 73. Roth is tied for 14th place.

Junior Edmund Broderick shot 74 and is tied for 18th place. Broderick made three birdies including his first and last holes of the day.

First-year Will Caronchi and sophomore Jahan Bains both shot 75 for the B team and are tied for 24th place. Caronchi made three birdies in his opening round, while Bains made four.

Senior David Hurly made one birdie in an opening round 76 and is tied for 34th place, while senior Joey Dotta and sophomore Aidan Oehrle are tied for 37th after shooting 77. Both Dotta and Oehrle made two birdies Friday.

The final round of the Lehigh Invitational is set to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday from Saucon Valley Country Club. Lehigh's A team will go off the first tee beginning at 10:50 a.m., while the B team will go off on No. 1 beginning at 11:40 a.m.
