Mountain Hawks Conclude Season Friday At NCAA Championships

3/19/2021 6:16:00 PM | Men's Wrestling

ST. LOUIS – Lehigh's 2021 wrestling season came to an end Friday as the five Mountain Hawks who advanced to the second day of the NCAA Championships were eliminated during afternoon sessions 3 and 4. As a result, the Mountain Hawks failed to crown an All-American for the first time since 2009, stopping a 10-tournament streak in which Lehigh had at least one every year.

Three of the five Mountain Hawks who advanced to Friday's action won their first match before being eliminated one match shy of Friday night's All-America round of 12.

Junior Jaret Lane began the day for Lehigh with a high-scoring 13-12 decision over Liam Cronin of Nebraska at 125. Lane was keyed by a second period takedown and four point near fall. In his third round consolation, riding time was the difference as Lane's delay in escaping in the third period allowed No. 12 seed Michael DeAugustino of Northwestern to claim the 2-1 decision. Lane's first season as a full-time starter ends with a 10-2 record and an EIWA championship.

Freshman Malyke Hines followed lane by picking up Lehigh's lone bonus point of the day with a 10-2 major decision over Sean Carter of Appalachian State in a second round consolation at 133. Hines' victory included more than five minutes of riding time. In his next match against No. 9 Michael McGee of Arizona State, Hines found himself up 5-4 with riding time advantage early in the third period when he was taken down for two plus four near fall. McGee went on to claim a 15-7 major decision eliminating the EIWA champion, whose deferred freshman season at 8-3.

Senior Jordan Wood was unsuccessful in becoming a three-time All-American. Wood's second day began with a 6-0 decision over Sam Schuyler of Buffalo but in his second bout of the day was unable to overcome a 6-0 deficit against Wyatt Hendrickson of Air Force. Wood's valiant comeback attempt came with a late second period takedown, then an escape and takedown that was awarded after a Lehigh coaches challenge. Hendrickson escaped to go up 7-5. Wood earned a stalling point to get within one but was unsuccessful in his bid for a late takedown. Wood finishes the season at 9-3. He won is fourth EIWA title last month and is expected back for the 2021-22 season.

At 174 freshman Jake Logan dropped his first bout of the day 6-5 to Ben Pasiuk of Army West Point. Pasiuk had a 2-1 edge in takedowns with Logan unable to score late in the third period. Logan's deferred freshman season finishes at 5-7.

Senior Jake Jakobsen ran into the No. 2 seed at 197, Eric Schultz of Nebraska, in his second round consolation. Schultz scored four takedowns and reversed in the final seconds after Jakobsen rode most of the third period to claim a 10-2 major decision. Jakobsen, who won his first EIWA championship last month, went 8-5 this season and finishes his Lehigh career at 46-31.

Lehigh finished with 11.5 points.

The Mountain Hawks were one of three teams to qualify 10 wrestlers for the NCAA championships. Of those 10 only Jakobsen and senior Dylan Ammerman are not expected back.
