3/1/2021 4:48:00 PM | Football
As March begins Lehighsports.com will be taking a position-by-position look at the Lehigh football team, which will play a four-game Patriot League schedule in the spring of 2021. The Mountain Hawks, under the direction of second-year head coach Tom Gilmore, will open the 2021 spring season March 13 versus Holy Cross at Goodman Stadium.
We begin with a look at the quarterback position.
Lehigh enters the spring season with a deep room of six signal-callers. There will be competition with the hope that someone will be able to step up and take the reins of the offense. The six quarterbacks on the roster include three returners and three newcomers with two of the three returnees seeing significant action last season.
Senior Addison Shoup is a dual threat who saw time at quarterback in six games in 2020 in addition to serving as the Mountain Hawks' holder. Shoup's 36-yard touchdown run was the difference in a 10-3 victory over Merrimack. He later replaced an injured Tyler Monaco at Fordham and threw the game-winning touchdown pass in Lehigh's 30-27 overtime win.
Junior Alec Beesmer ended the 2019 under center after starting Lehigh's final two games against Sacred Heart and Lafayette. Beesmer threw for 437 yards over three games and threw his first career touchdown pass at Bucknell. He also gained 119 yards on the ground before subtracting yardage lost due to sacks.
Sophomore Nigel Summerville is the third returning quarterback. The three newcomers include freshmen Hank Shapiro from Westfield, N.J. and Dante Perri from Philadelphia; and transfer Cross Wilkinson, who comes to Lehigh from Toledo and has three years of eligibility remaining. Wilkinson appeared in one game for Toledo in 2018 and was a highly-regarded prospect out of Wheeling, W. Va.
