Mountain Hawks Claim Three Hammer Awards At Journeymen Collegiate Classic
11/14/2021 2:52:00 PM | Men's Wrestling
MANHEIM, Pa. – Three Lehigh wrestlers captured Hammer Awards for winning "A" brackets as the Mountain Hawks competed at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic Sunday at Spooky Nook Sports Complex. Senior Jordan Wood (285A), junior Jaret Lane (125A) and sophomore Brian Meyer (165) were Lehigh's Hammer Award winners. For Wood, it was his second career Hammer after winning in 2018.
The Mountain Hawks had a total of 22 entrants Sunday with 18 wrestlers competing attached and four unattached. In addition to the three Hammer Award winners, freshman Caden Wright won his bracket at 184. Junior Satoshi Abe (133B) and freshman Luca Frinzi (157C) were runners-up in their respective brackets.
Lane's road to the Hammer Award included three falls. He began the day with a first period pin of Bloomsburg's Shawn Orem and then posted third period falls in his final two matches. In the finals against Harvard's Diego Sotelo, Lane fell behind early but came back to take a 4-3 lead after two. Tied 4-4 in the third, Lane took Sotelo to his back and picked up his third fall of the day in 5:35.
Wood needed to wrestle just two bouts Sunday but both came against ranked opponents in the 285A bracket. He began with a rematch from last Saturday against Oregon State's Gary Traub. After a 4-3 win a week ago, Wood scored a first period takedown on Sunday and added an escape and riding time in a 4-0 decision. In the finals, Wood met Matt Stencel of Central Michigan and made a late first period takedown stand in a 3-1 decision.
Meyer's day featured three close bouts, with the sophomore finding a way to win all three. In his first match he used a second period ride out and third period escape to defeat Matthew Olguin of Oregon State 2-0. Meyer nearly lost a big lead against Hofstra's Holden Heller but scored a takedown in sudden victory to win 9-7. His finals bout with Penn's Lucas Revano was 1-1 through regulation and sudden victory. Meyer then escaped in the first half of the tiebreaker and rode out the second half to win 2-1.

At 184F, Wright went 3-0 with a major decision and a fall to win his bracket.
Third place finishers for the Mountain Hawks included freshman Malyke Hines (133A), junior Dan Moran (141B) and freshman Jake Logan (174A).
"Our three champs had a good plan," Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro said. "They went out and wrestled three periods, seven minutes and fought the whole time. In Meyer's case he went overtime, but you have to fight the whole time. You have to prepare to battle and those three guys came away champions because that's what they did.
"Some of our guys were too focused on how they felt," Santoro continued. "A couple could have been weight cut, put a couple we just lost momentum and we didn't wrestle with the intensity that we needed to in the second and third periods. That's not typically what our team does, but that's what they did today. That's something we have to address. Effort is always the number one thing we're looking for. We just have to do better with that across the board."
Four first-year Mountain Hawks also competed unattached, with Carter Bailey finishing fourth at 125A, Connor Herceg placing sixth at 165A, Jack Wilt finishing fifth at 184C and Nathan Taylor taking fourth at 285B.
