11/10/2021 3:32:00 PM | Athletics
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh Athletics is excited to announce a new, multi-year partnership with Lehigh Valley Restaurant Group – Red Robin and The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Building on the success of Lehigh football's Tackle Cancer Day in 2019 and 2021, this partnership will continue to focus on blood cancer awareness and fundraising for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Under this new partnership, Lehigh football will continue to host Tackle Cancer Day and blood cancer awareness days will be introduced for the Lehigh men's and women's basketball and wrestling programs. Sport-specific fundraising initiatives will also be introduced during the basketball and wrestling seasons.
"Lehigh Valley Restaurant Group – Red Robin has been a proud supporter of Lehigh Athletics for over 20 years. Our Founder, Steven J. Hanzlik, was a Lehigh grad and he passed away after his fourth battle with Leukemia in 2010. It was then that we were introduced to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), and the incredible work they have done to support families touched by a blood cancer. To us, it was a no-brainer that we brought Lehigh Athletics, Red Robin and LLS together, to help bring awareness to LLS, and to share in the mission that we will continue to fight until we know there is a cure to ALL blood cancers," said Patricia Meyers, Director of Marketing, Lehigh Valley Restaurant Group – Red Robin.
"The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society appreciates the partnership of Lehigh Athletics and Red Robin/Lehigh Valley Restaurant Group. Through this partnership, LLS can provide the much-needed resources to our patients and their families," said Pamela Formica, Campaign Development Director, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
Lehigh will host three additional blood cancer awareness games during the winter athletics season:
Fundraising initiatives being introduced include '3's For A Cure." For every 3-point basket made by the Lehigh men's and women's basketball teams, in both home and away games, Lehigh Valley Restaurant Group – Red Robin will make a $3 donation to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The Lehigh wrestling program will participate in "Pin Cancer." For every pin during dual meet competition, a $4 donation will be made to LLS.
"Lehigh Athletics values the long-term partnership we have had with Lehigh Valley Restaurant Group-Red Robin for over two decades," said Rich Haas, Lehigh Athletics' Assistant Athletic Director for Sales & Marketing. "There is excitement around the expansion of this partnership with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, which has provided additional opportunities to help those in our community affected by cancer. I'm looking forward to the awareness and fundraising that will take place over the multiple years of this partnership, starting with '3's for a Cure' and 'Pin Cancer' this winter, and continuing with Tackle Cancer Day again next fall in Goodman Stadium."
The relationship with Lehigh Valley Restaurant Group-Red Robin and LLS was secured by LEARFIELD's locally-based Mountain Hawks Sports Properties team – the university's multimedia rightsholder that aligns with the athletics administration in management of the comprehensive rights relationship and corporate partner program.
"What better way to take down cancer, than to cheer on our Lehigh Teams and shoot '3's for a Cure' at their Men's and Women's basketball home games, and 'Pin Cancer' for home wrestling matches," Meyers said. "We are honored to work beside great partners like Lehigh Athletics and LLS. Together, we are helping to bring light to the darkness of cancer…not just someday, but today."
Other elements and activation will take place through the time of this partnership to help support those affected by blood cancer.
