Mountain Hawks Finish 26th at 47th Annual Lehigh Paul Short Run

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's cross country team wrapped up the 47th Annual Lehigh Paul Short Run presented by Asics on Friday by finishing 26th in the 8K Gold race. Junior Connor Melko was the first Mountain Hawk to finish for a third time in as many meets this season, followed by classmate Tyler French and senior Nick Wilson.

Melko placed 129th overall with a time of 25:00.5 while French was 148th (25:07.3) and Wilson came in 164th (25:14.3).

"I thought our pack guys did a great job," said Lehigh head coach Todd Etters. "They stuck together and ran well. Tyler French had a phenomenal race, really solidifying himself on our team as a go-to guy. Nick Wilson continues to keep improving."

Overall, the Mountain Hawks finished with 803 points. There were 40 total teams in the Gold race. "I thought our top guys were off a little bit today," said Etters. "That's going to happen sometimes. In a race like this where there's just a sea of people running, if you're off a little, it can really get in your head because a lot of guys start passing you and you can lose focus. We need to regroup up front a little bit. Those guys know that.

"Our depth guys did a good job," Etters continued. "If you want to do well as a team, you need all five guys to run great. We didn't quite have that today, but we were in the mid-20s. So I think we have room to improve, but we're not that far off."

Rounding out Lehigh's top five were a pair of seniors – Brad DeMassa in 197th (25:27.6) and Avery Lederer in 252nd (25:48.7). In total, there were 357 runners in the Gold race.

Several Mountain Hawks competed in the Open Race, which kicked off the day. Sophomore Ethan Davis was the first Lehigh runner to cross the finish line, placing 73rd with a time of 26:03.3.

The Paul Short Run made its return on Friday after a one-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic in a cross country meet unlike any other.

"You can't beat this," said Etters. "These are races they'll remember for the rest of their lives. You just don't find this level of quality [anywhere else] – this level of people, the size of the race, perfect conditions today. Hats off to all the Lehigh folks.

"The officials, the trainers, the medical staff, the parkers, everyone just buys into this event and it's something Lehigh should be really proud of. We put on certainly the finest cross country race in the country. We have a lot to be proud of and I'm glad it's here."
