Mountain Hawks to open 2020 with visits to Binghamton, No. 19 Cornell

1/8/2020 3:14:00 PM | Men's Wrestling

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Fresh off a 3-0 showing at the South Beach Duals, No. 14 Lehigh opens up the 2020 portion of its dual schedule with two EIWA duals in central New York. The Mountain Hawks' trip begins with their first-ever dual at Binghamton on Friday, following by the 98th meeting of Lehigh and Cornell on Saturday. Lehigh's 3-0 showing at the South Beach Duals included nationally-ranked wins over Minnesota and Missouri and a convincing 47-4 win over Duke. Five Mountain Hawk wrestlers posted perfect 3-0 marks at the South Beach Duals. Lehigh won 23 bouts over the three duals in Florida and scored bonus points in 14 of those victories. This weekend's duals begin a stretch of seven straight against EIWA opponents.

Lehigh enjoyed a successful trip to the South Beach Duals, going 3-0 with victories against No. 15 Minnesota, Duke and No. 19 Missouri, Dec. 29-30. Mountain Hawk Wrestlers went 23-7 in 30 bouts to snap a three-dual slide. Five Mountain Hawks went 3-0 at the South Beach Duals: Brandon Paetzell (125), Nick Farro (133), Josh Humphreys (157), Chris Weiler (184) and Jake Jakobsen (197). Fourteen of Lehigh's 23 victories produced bonus points, led by Jakobsen, who went 3-for-3 in bonus wins with a fall and two major decisions.

Eleven Lehigh wrestlers rang in 2020 at the Southern Scuffle, Jan. 1-2 in Chattanooga, Tenn. Freshman Jake Logan led the way for the Lehigh contingent, placing eighth at 174 while competing unattached. Sophomore Jaret Lane finished one win shy of a podium place at 133. In all eight of Lehigh's 11 entrants won at least one bout at the tournament.

Six Mountain Hawks appear in the latest post-holiday tournament InterMat rankings, led by senior Jordan Kutler, who is ranked third at 174. Lehigh also has seven wrestlers ranked by FloWrestling and Amateur Wrestling News and has eight ranked by The Open Mat. In addition to Kutler, Brandon Paetzell (125), Josh Humphreys (157), Chris Weiler (184), Jake Jakobsen (197) and Jordan Wood (285) are ranked across the board by all four outlets. Junior Nick Farro (133) is ranked by three of the four, while sophomore Jimmy Hoffman (149) is ranked by The Open Mat.

Binghamton will wrestle its first duals of the new year against Lehigh and Columbia on Friday. The Bearcats competed at the Southern Scuffle last week, with sophomore Lou Deprez leading the way by winning the title at 184, knocking off second-ranked Trent Hidlay along the way. Deprez is ranked sixth at 184. The only other ranked Bearcat is Zack Trampe, who comes in at No. 11 at 133, but Trampe is not listed among Binghamton's probable starters. Binghamton is 2-1 in duals with wins at South Dakota State and in its most recent dual action over Sacred Heart. The Bearcats' loss came against North Carolina State. Binghamton has also been busy on the tournament circuit, hosting the Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open while traveling to the Daktronics Open and the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational in addition to the Southern Scuffle. Kyle Borshoff is in his fifth year at Binghamton and his third as head coach.

Cornell owns a 4-3 dual record as the Big Red await Lehigh's arrival on Saturday. The Big Red wrestled five matches at the South Beach Duals, winning their first four, over South Dakota State, Michigan State, Wyoming and Missouri before falling to Minnesota in their final dual. Cornell also has early-season losses to North Carolina State and Ohio State and an 11th place finish at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. The Big Red lineup has been hit by injuries and four top wrestlers taking Olympic deferral years. Just three Cornell wrestlers appear in the latest InterMat rankings, with Chas Tucker (No. 4 at 133) and Ben Darmstadt (No. 6 at 197) ranked in the top 10. Brandon Womack is also ranked at 174, but is not listed among Big Red probables for this weekend. Rob Koll is in his 26th season as Cornell's head coach.

Lehigh will face one of its newest EIWA opponents and one of its oldest. The Mountain Hawks will face Binghamton for just the fourth time and the first time in Vestal, N.Y. Cornell is Lehigh's third most-often wrestled opponent behind Penn State and Navy. The Big Red have won seven of the last nine duals in the series. Lehigh's first-ever dual meet was against Cornell in 1910.

Friday's dual versus Binghamton begins at 5 p.m. from Events Center in Vestal, N.Y. and will be streamed on FloWrestling.org (subscription required). Saturday's Cornell match begins at 1 p.m. from the Friedman Wrestling Center in Ithaca, N.Y. and will be streamed on ESPN+ (subscription required). Audio for both duals will be available on Fox Sports Radio 1230/1320 AM and 94.7 FM Allentown as well as LVFoxSports.com.

The Mountain Hawks return to Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall for a pair of EIWA duals. Lehigh hosts American Friday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. and then welcomes Navy Jan. 18 at 2 p.m. for the 100th meeting in what is Lehigh's second most-contested rivalry.
