BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh Athletics celebrated the accomplishments of the 2018-19 school year with the annual Student-Athlete Awards Convocation, Monday, May 6 at Baker Hall inside the Zoellner Arts Center. The event allowed the entire athletics department to look back to the individual and team accomplishments, and honors, from this past school year. The Convocation included a highlight video, the announcement of Lehigh's department award winners and more.
Â
Reagan Jahn of the women's golf team received the department's highest honor – the Graduating Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. Jahn holds a 3.93 cumulative GPA as a supply chain management major and was recently named Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women's golf. A three-time All-Patriot League honoree and three-time Academic All-Patriot League selection, Jahn set Lehigh program records for scoring average, low round and low 54-hole tournament total in her career.
Â
The Karen A. Adams Graduating Female Athlete Award was presented to two sport standout Clare Severe. A four-year contributor to the women's soccer program, Severe competed in track and field in the winter and spring. She is a member of two Patriot League championship-winning relay teams, and owns a pair of indoor individual league runner-up finishes. Severe also holds school records in the indoor mile and the outdoor 1500m run.
Â
The Graduating Male Athlete Award went to Dominick Bragalone from football. A four-time first team All-Patriot League selection, Bragalone was a consensus first team FCS All-American as a junior in 2017 and will graduate as Lehigh's career leader in rushing yards, rushing touchdowns, total touchdowns and scoring.
Â
The J. Daniel Nolan Award, presented to the top first-year male student-athlete, went to Josh Humphreys from wrestling. Humphreys won an EIWA title at 157 pounds, becoming just Lehigh's second true freshman EIWA champion in 39 years. Humphreys reached the round of 12 at the NCAA Championships in Pittsburgh, finishing one win shy of earning All-America honors.
Â
Finalists for the John Steckbeck Award, presented to the top first-year female student-athlete, were announced at the Convocation, but the winner is yet to be announced, with two finalists still competing in spring championship seasons. This year's finalists are Nicole Abbondandelo from cross country/track and field, Jaelynn Chesson from softball and Olivia Perrone from field hockey.
Â
Sabrina Mertz from women's soccer received the Mary O'Hurley Leadership Award, given to the department's top graduating female leader. Mertz was a second team All-Patriot League selection in 2018 and tied for the team lead in goals and points. Her leadership helped carry the Mountain Hawks to two dramatic overtime wins in the Patriot League Tournament and a berth in the finals last November.
Â
The John A. Cable Award, presented to the department's outstanding graduating male leader, went to Ryan Malloy of baseball. Malloy has set a positive example for a young team and helped carry the Mountain Hawks out of an early-season hole to make a run at the postseason in 2019. Malloy is an All-Patriot League candidate as he leads Lehigh with eight home runs and is second on the team with 40 RBIs to go with a .302 average.
Â
The department's top service award, the Marlene "Linny" Fowler Service Award went to Lidia Breen of women's soccer. A journalism major, Breen serves as a co-captain for T.I.D.E. (tackling inclusion, diversity and equality). She is also involved with the Lehigh chapter of Athlete Ally and has collaborated with Lehigh's C.O.A.C.H. community outreach program, SAM (Student-Athlete Mentors) and the Student-Athlete council.
Â
Senior Sam Bencheghib of the men's tennis team won the department's Sportsmanship Award. In a sport where players often make their own line calls, Bencheghib has demonstrated respect for teammates, coaches, opponents and officials over four years. He has also shown a level of selflessness within his own team, giving up his singles position to a younger teammate whose family was in attendance.
 Â
In addition, six student-athletes were recipients of the Distinguished Achievement Award. These recipients are senior student-athletes who have displayed a high level of scholarship, significant athletic achievement at the league level (and beyond) and demonstrated service to the institution. Winners included Jahn, Severe, Kyle Berman of cross country/track and field, baseball players Ethan Frohman and Jeff Shanfeldt and wrestler Scott Parker.
Â
Women's basketball manager Olivia Dahlgren was honored with the Phillip J. Sclar Award, which recognizes an underclass student worker or manager who exemplifies the spirit and character of the late Phil Sclar.
