Lehigh opens spring campaign with Sunday's first round at UNCG Martin Downs Collegiate

PALM CITY, Fla. – Playing its first competitive round of the spring season, the Lehigh men's golf team carded a 319 on day one of the three-day UNCG Martin Downs Collegiate Sunday on the Osprey Course at Martin Downs Golf Club. Juniors Owen Quinn and Ryan Kelly both shot rounds of four over par 76 as the Mountain Hawks trail front-running Mercer by 35 strokes after one round.
 
Quinn carded three birdies in his round and was even after nine holes but hit some difficulty at the end of his round resulting in the 76. Kelly shot 38 on both the front and back nine and made one birdie, on the par 5 17th hole. The Lehigh duo is tied for 32nd place.
 
Freshman Michael Tanaka also birdied 17 and is tied for 66th after an opening round 80. Seniors Lee Hammerschmidt and Eamon Marone are in 88th and 90th place, respectively. Hammerschmidt shot 87, while Marone birdied a pair of par 3s, but finished with an 89.
 
Competing as an individual, senior Max Redetzke shot 83 and is tied for 80th place.
 
Mercer was the only team in the 13-team field to break par in Sunday's opening round as the Bears shot 284 to take a nine-stroke lead over tournament host UNCG after day one. Samford and Chattanooga are tied for third, 10 strokes off the pace.
 
Kristian Tannum Donaldson of VCU shot five under par 67 to take a one stroke lead over Nick Lyerly of UNCG. Mercer had two players shoot 70 and two others shoot 71.
 
The UNCG Martin Downs Collegiate continues Monday with round two. Lehigh will play beginning on hole 10 with tee times starting at 8:30 a.m. Live scoring will once again be available on GolfStat.
