BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following its first-ever win over Boston University Saturday, junior Lenke Havas has been named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week while freshman Maddie Kahn received both Goalkeeper and Rookie of the Week, as announced on Monday. The three weekly honors gives the Mountain Hawks eight on the season, the most weekly awards in program history (bettering the six honorees in 1994 and 2007).
Havas was previously named Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 2 while Kahn garnered Goalkeeper of the Week that same day. Additional Lehigh award winners this season were freshmen Sydney White (Defensive Player) and Sarah Bonthuis (Rookie) on Sept. 9, and junior Drew Pecora (Offensive Player) on Sept. 23. It also marked the first time in program history the Mountain Hawks received all four awards the same season.
Havas played a critical role in the Mountain Hawks' back line over the weekend, which allowed just one goal (which came on a penalty stroke). Lehigh's defense allowed only four total shots (three on goal) against Saint Louis Friday in the Mountain Hawks' third shutout of the season (after none all of last year). She then helped the Mountain Hawks to their first-ever win over Boston University Saturday. Lehigh limited Boston University to just one penalty-stroke goal. Havas also made a critical pass on Drew Pecora's game-winning overtime goal. She made the initial pass into the circle, which led to two Pecora shots, the second of which gave Lehigh a victory over the defending Patriot League champs. In the end, Havas and the Mountain Hawks allowed just 43 goals this season, the program's fewest since 2003. Offensively, Havas finished her season with five goals and five assists for 15 points.
Kahn stopped 13-of-14 shots on the weekend, with the only goal she allowed being a penalty stroke goal. The Ocean City, New Jersey native began by making three saves against Saint Louis Friday for her third shutout of the season. She became just the third Lehigh goalkeeper since the turn of the century to record three or more shutouts in a year. Kahn went on to make 10 saves vs. Boston University Saturday, tallying eight of them in the second half and six in the fourth quarter to help send the game to overtime. Kahn also helped Lehigh win seven games on the year, its best win total since 2007. She finished the year with a 2.34 goals against average and 75.1 save percentage (good for third in the Patriot League).
Pecora was also recognized among the honorable mentions on the Patriot League weekly honor roll. The junior scored a goal vs. Saint Louis and Boston University, to tie then break the program record for goals in a season. Her goal just 1:56 into the extra session was her 14th of the season, breaking Kim Eng's previous school record of 13 set in 2009.
With this weekend's victories, Lehigh improved its final record to 7-11, including 2-4 in league play. The Mountain Hawks finished in a three-way tie for fourth place (with Holy Cross and Boston University), but the Crusaders won the tiebreaker. Regardless, it was a huge season of progress for the program, who started the year 5-1 (its best start to a season since 1983). Along with its best overall record since 2007, the Mountain Hawks' 35 goals are also their most since 2007 while their 43 goals allowed are fewest since 2003. Lehigh's goal differential (-8) is also its best since 2004.
