BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Two members of the Lehigh football team have been named to the Academic All-District 2 team, announced Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Sophomore wide receiver Austin Dambach and junior linebacker Pete Haffner both garnered their first career Academic All-District honors and will now advance to the ballot for potential Academic All-America recognition.
The Academic All-District teams are voted on by members of CoSIDA whose schools are in the region. District 2 consists of schools from Washington, D.C., Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. To be eligible for the team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or better and be a starter or key reserve.
Dambach leads the Mountain Hawks with a 3.93 cumulative GPA. He is currently undeclared in Lehigh's College of Business. Dambach made the 2018 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and has made Lehigh's Dean's List with a GPA of 3.6 or better in both of his first two semesters at Lehigh.
On the field, Dambach has shaken off an early-season injury to appear in seven of nine games, with four starts. He has 21 receptions for 270 yards and a touchdown. Dambach had six receptions for 64 yards in Lehigh's Patriot League opener at Colgate and caught his first touchdown of the season two weeks later at Fordham.
Haffner is a finance major with a 3.70 GPA. He is a two-year member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and was selected to the Academic All-Patriot League Team following the 2018 season. Haffner has made Lehigh's Dean's List in three of his first four semesters.
Lehigh's second leading tackler, Haffner has started all nine games at linebacker, posting 81 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss and four sacks. In the last two weeks, Haffner was named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week with seven tackles and the first two interceptions of his career against Holy Cross, and then a career-high 16 tackles, including three tackles for loss and two sacks at Bucknell.
This marks the fifth consecutive year that Lehigh had at least one student-athlete earn Academic All-District recognition. Last year defensive lineman Harrison Kauffman was recognized for the second straight season.
The Mountain Hawks will play a rare November non-league game Saturday at Sacred Heart with game time set for noon. The game will by televised on SNY and streamed at NECFrontRow.com, with audio coverage on Fox Sports Radio 1230/1320 AM and 94.7 FM Allentown and LVFoxSports.com beginning at 11 a.m.
