Lehigh plays impressive all-around game to earn first-ever win against Boston U.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's soccer team impressed at both ends of the field on Saturday as senior Mary Casey scored the game's only goal in the 40th minute, accounting for all the offense the Mountain Hawks would need in a 1-0 victory over visiting Boston University. Lehigh picked up its first win over the Terriers in program history, while also avenging a 2018 Patriot League Title Game defeat. Most importantly, the Mountain Hawks picked up three big points to improve to 2-3-0 in league play (4-5-4 overall).

"It was a big six-point head-to-head game," said Lehigh head coach Eric Lambinus. "We both played in the finals last year, but I think we'll both be fighting for a postseason spot this year, so we have to beat the teams around us. As much as it was a revenge game, it was a big game to give ourselves a chance to beat them out for a spot at the end of the year."

An action-filled game saw Lehigh finish with a 21-20 edge in shots. First-half shots were tied 9-9, but the Mountain Hawks had the better of the chances. In the 23rd minute off a corner kick, freshman Ryelle Shuey got off a header which looked ticketed for the back of the net, but the Terriers' Chloee Sagmoe headed the ball out of harm's way.

BU's best first-half chance was in the 37th minute as Marli Rajacich looked to have a break towards goal, but sophomore Erin Keefe hustled back into the play to block the shot. Moments later, junior Libby Andrews blocked another Terriers' shot to keep the game scoreless.

Just moments later, the Mountain Hawks got on the board as Casey crashed towards net and got a foot on a Shuey free kick, making a redirection into the right side of the goal for a 1-0 advantage at the 39:52 mark.
Another glittering chance came in the 44th minute as senior Kayla Arestivo fired a hard lefty shot from inside the box towards the left side of the goal, but BU goalkeeper Amanda Fay made the save.

The Mountain Hawks kept the momentum going into the second, firing the first seven shots of the half to extend its run to nine straight (including the end of the first half). Lehigh couldn't extend its leads and from there, the Terriers began to gain momentum, firing 11 of the game's final 16 shots.

Junior Miranda Royds finished the contest with seven saves, five in the second half. None was bigger than in the 58th minute when Shannon Keefe came in all alone on a breakaway. Royds wasn't phased, making the tremendous save and forcing a corner kick.
In the 88th minute, Royds made another point-blank stop, this time on McKenna Kennedy, to help wrap up the 1-0 final.
Along with Lehigh's 21-20 edge in shots, the Terriers held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks. Royds' seven saves was good for her sixth shutout of the season. Fay made five stops for Boston University.

"Miranda made herself big on the breakaway, she put herself in position and didn't try to do too much," said Lambinus. "It's really hard for goalies, who want to be more active and engaged, but the goalie just has to be in the right position and make the right reaction, which she did. She wasn't too aggressive, she made herself big and she forced the other player to make the decision. It's almost like a game of chicken and she won. With the other saves she made, Miranda trusted her athleticism and trusted her ability to make those reactions. Through all her training, she's just gotten better and better and better."

The Mountain Hawks will now head to Princeton on Tuesday to face the Tigers at 5 p.m. before hosting Holy Cross next Saturday (Oct. 19) at 1 p.m. on Senior Day.

"We've been hard on this team knowing they have another level they can play," said Lambinus. "Today was the most consistent they've played throughout a full 90 minutes. They fought, they battled, they attacked and they defended."
