Mountain Hawks aim for 7-0 start against NJIT on Tuesday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Lehigh volleyball got its 2018 season started in historic fashion. The Mountain Hawks rattled off six straight victories for a 6-0 start to the year, the program's best since 1979.
The Mountain Hawks began their journey on Friday afternoon with a big victory over Big Ten's Rutgers, Lehigh's first win over the Scarlet Knights in 25 years. That performance was followed by three-straight sweeps of Rider, Manhattan, and Coppin State, with the Mountain Hawks leaving Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall on Saturday as the only undefeated team in the Crosstown Invitational.
Lehigh heads back on the road Tuesday night to face NJIT at 7 p.m. The Highlanders enter Tuesday's showdown with Lehigh at 1-5. NJIT fell to St. Francis Brooklyn in straight sets, but won 3-1 over Delaware State before falling to Bucknell 3-1 to conclude the Terrier Classic in Brooklyn, N.Y. over the weekend.
The four wins in the weekend invitational capped off a 5-0 week for the Mountain Hawks, led by sophomore Sabrina Lancaster, who tallied a career high 17 kills against Coppin State on Saturday and finished the week with a team-high 3.79 kills per set. Junior Lauren Bright enters Tuesday with a team-leading .430 hitting percentage in 19 sets. She is currently ranked second in the Patriot League behind Navy's Katie Patrick (.463).
With a hitting percentage of .250 as a team, Lehigh is ranked first among all Patriot League teams. The Mountain Hawks are second in the league in opponent's hitting percentage with a .120 mark. Lehigh also leads the Patriot League in kills per set (13.57) and opponent kills (9.67).
Offensively, NJIT is led by Liz Benson, who leads the Highlanders with a .275 hitting percentage. She also holds the team lead in assists with 199 in 23 sets played this season.
NJIT is ninth in the Atlantic Sun in hitting percentage with .112 and seventh in kills per set with 10.95. The Highlanders lead the conference in digs per set with 18.42.
The Mountain Hawks are 3-2 all-time against NJIT with their last victory coming Oct. 18, 2014.
With a victory Tuesday, Lehigh would start the year 7-0 for the first time since 1979 as well.
