Lehigh sweeps Saint Peter's 3-0 to move to 2-0 on season

EASTON, Pa. – The Mountain Hawks fought through stiff competition on Monday afternoon at Lafayette, but were able to come away with the 3-0 sweep and hold off a competitive Saint Peter's team. The Mountain Hawks fell behind in all three of their sets, but rallied to come away with the decisive victory, to improve to 2-0 on the season.

"I think we were slow to get off the ground, a little sluggish at times, but we were able to do enough to keep them off balance and come away with the win," said head coach Alexa Keckler.

Lehigh's first set was a little too close for comfort up until the end, fending off the Peacocks and coming away with a three-point win, 25-22.

The second set was a lot of the same story for the Mountain Hawks. After a Lehigh timeout, trailing 10-4, the Mountain Hawks battled back, taking six of eight points from Saint Peter's including three kills from sophomore Sabrina Lancaster, eventually tying the Peacocks at 15.

The teams traded blows for the remainder of the set and with Lehigh leading 24-23, the Mountain Hawks took advantage of a block error by Alexus Sharp, as senior Megan Polak set up the kill by junior Julia Pressly to extend the match lead to 2-0.

With Lehigh and Saint Peter's knotted up at 23 in the third set, kills by Pressly and senior Victoria Hemsath sealed the deal and gave the Mountain Hawks the three-set victory.

Pressly,  Lancaster, and junior middle blocker Lauren Bright kept the Peacocks on their toes with 13, 12, and eight kills, respectively. Bright hit .375 to lead the Mountain Hawks, junior Emily Poole hit .300, and Pressly hit .222.

"In the just the second game of the season, we reshuffled some new players on the court, attacked in the zones, and our hitters made our offense less predictable," Keckler said. "The match today was helpful on how to play against teams that are scrappy and fight hard. We were able to work through frustrating moments and find ways to score."

Polak had 33 assists for Lehigh, while Patriot League Player of the Week Ana Spangenberg had 10 kills and team-best 19 digs for her second straight double-double.

Alanis Alvarado led Saint Peter's with 13 kills. Angelleyshka Curbelo had 14 digs to lead the Peacocks.

Lehigh returns home this weekend is to host the two-day Crosstown Invitational with matches Friday against Rutgers at 4 p.m. and Rider at 7 p.m. The Mountain Hawks face Manhattan at 10 a.m. on Saturday and Coppin State at 4 p.m. All four Lehigh matches will be streamed on the Patriot League Network.
