
Lehigh hosts Crosstown Invitational this weekend

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — After back-to-back victories over Duquesne and Saint Peter's, the Mountain Hawks come into this weekend's Crosstown Invitational looking to extend their winning streak. Lehigh hopes to have the same success against four nonleague opponents on Friday and Saturday when Rutgers, Rider, Manhattan, and Coppin State visit Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall.

Lehigh (2-0) is led by Patriot League Player of the Week, junior Ana Spangenberg, who enters the weekend leading the Patriot League in kill percentage with 4.29, while senior Megan Polak leads the Mountain Hawks with 77 assists, averaging 11 assists per game. Junior Lauren Bright is fourth in hitting percentage at .364. With a hitting mark of .211 in seven sets so far, the Mountain Hawks are ranked second as a team. Lehigh is limiting teams to a .160 hitting percentage, good for sixth among all Patriot League teams.

Rutgers visits Bethlehem in Friday's 4 p.m. matchup against the Mountain Hawks to kick off the invitational. The last time Rutgers came into town, it knocked off Lehigh 3-2 back on September 11, 2012. The Scarlet Knights (0-3) are coming off three straight losses to Colgate, Cal, and Chicago State in last weekend's Molten Classic in Berkeley, Calif. Rutgers lost the first match 3-1 to the Raiders before being swept in back-to-back contests to the Golden Bears and Cougars. Rutgers is led by junior Jasmine Stackhouse, coming into the weekend with a .370 hitting percentage, ranked ninth in the Big 10. Through their first 10 sets of the season, the Scarlet Knights are ranked last in the conference in hitting percentage at .159.

Rider enters the Crosstown Invitational on Friday making its season debut against the Mountain Hawks. The Broncs enter 2018 ranked sixth in the MAAC preseason poll after going 17-15 just one season ago. Rider returns six players from 2017, led by first team All-MAAC honoree Hailey Riede. The senior right-side hitter set career-highs in kills (373), kills per set (3.11), points (400.5) and points per set (3.34) last season. Coming off a stellar freshman year, sophomore Danielle Blanco enters 2018 as the team's primary setter. She had 252 digs, 48 assists and 24 aces last year. Tomorrow night, Rider will square off with Lehigh for the first time since 2012.

The Mountain Hawks will get their first look of the Manhattan Jaspers since 1996 on Saturday. Manhattan (0-3) lost three straight matches to St. John's, Central Connecticut State, and Eastern Michigan last weekend during the Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic in Queens, N.Y. The Jaspers were picked to finish ninth in the preseason MAAC poll, coming off a 2-29 season in 2017. They return 11 players from last season, including senior outside-hitter Sandra Lozanova and senior defensive specialist Alyssa Rehrer, who finished last season second in the conference for digs per set with 4.86. The Jaspers are hitting .038 as a team through their first nine sets. Freshman setter Shruti Mangapudi leads the team in assists with 37 through her seven sets.

To close the 2018 Crosstown Invitational, Lehigh takes on Coppin State for the second year in a row. The Eagles enter the weekend slate at 1-3, following a sweep of Saint Peter's last night. Freshman Miajavon Coleman leads Coppin State with a team-high .359 hitting percentage with 31 kills, second to only junior Asia Stennis (33). Freshman Rebekka Hauri has 30 digs with 2.50 per set through her first 12 sets of the season. Christa Johnson paces the Eagles with six blocks. Coppin State is hitting .145 as a team, however the Eagles' opponents are hitting .275 against them.
