Lehigh Opens Season With Convincing Victory Over Kutztown

11/6/2018 9:16:00 PM | Women's Basketball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's basketball team opened its season with a 73-39 victory over the Kutztown Golden Bears at Stabler Arena Tuesday.

The Mountain Hawks had three players score in double figures as junior Camryn Buhr (13), senior Hailey Pascoe (12) and freshman Emma Grothaus (13) helped pave the way. With the win, Lehigh moves to 1-0 overall while Kutztown remains 0-0 as this was an exhibition for the Golden Bears.

An all-around team effort for Lehigh, featured 37 points off the bench with 12 different Mountain Hawks putting up points. Those 37 points from the bench were just one shy of last season's high of 38 against Mansfield.

"This is a team with a lot of depth and we're going to play a lot of kids. We have a bunch of kids that are unselfish with the ball. One of the strengths of this team is the depth and balanced scoring we have which means we won't have to rely on just one or two players to score the majority of our points," said head coach Sue Troyan after the game. "We have a lot of kids that can put the ball in the basket, so we'll have a rotation of 11 to 12 kids deep that can score for us."

Playing in her first game as a Mountain Hawk, Grothaus tallied 11 rebounds to for her first collegiate double-double.

"Even in limited minutes, I thought Emma did a great job. She used her size to her advantage, and she's a capable scorer near the basket. She reads the ball very well, regardless of it's an offensive or defensive rebound. I thought we did a good job of finding her in different situations as well," said Troyan.

Playing in her first game since the 2016-17 season, Pascoe went 5-of-11 from the field which included two made three-pointers.

"It's great to have her back on the court, and she's a critical component to our team in different ways. On the offensive side she's a good scorer with a deep range three and can get her shot off quickly," said Troyan.

The Mountain Hawks kicked off the game with a 5-0 run that saw Pascoe convert a three-pointer for her first points since the 2016-17 season. Kutztown would go on a 7-0 run soon after to tie it up at 7-7 with 5:28 left in the first quarter. That would be the closest Kutztown would get to Mountain Hawks as Lehigh then turned around with an 11-2 run to close out the quarter. The Mountain Hawks used a 31-2 run spanning the first and second quarters to build a 42-12 halftime lead.

"I thought the first five minutes was mainly just nerves, but once we got settled in, especially on the defensive zone, we were able to set the tone. Kutztown is a strong Division II program, a team that was selected in as one of the top-10 teams in the nation in the preseason, and they were in a 30-point game with Maryland last week as part of their preseason," said Troyan. "They're a capable shooting team, but when we were able to establish ourselves we were able to take away their perimeter game and caused a lot of turnovers that led to easy transitions baskets."

Lehigh caused 26 total turnovers, which resulted in 32 points.

The rest of the game saw Lehigh firmly in control, as the Mountain Hawks led by as many 36 when they controlled a 73-37 advantage over Kutztown with 2:27 left in the fourth quarter.

Lehigh takes to the road for the first time this season as they travel to New Britain, Conn. to take on the Blue Devils of Central Connecticut State of the Northeast Conference (NEC) Saturday,  at 11 a.m. Audio coverage will be available at Lehighsports.com.
