Raiders run past Lehigh in Mountain Hawks' home finale

Lehigh scored a touchdown on a 30-yard pass play from senior Brad Mayes to freshman Raymond Falcone, the first touchdown allowed by the Raiders since their opening game win over Holy Cross on Sept. 1, but Colgate rushed for 313 yards on the way to its 14th consecutive win dating back to last season.
Colgate boasts the top defense in the FCS, which allowed just 174 yards to Lehigh including just 48 on the ground. The loss drops the Mountain Hawks to 2-8 overall and 1-4 in Patriot League play. Colgate is now 9-0 and 6-0 in the league. The Raiders won the outright league title after clinching the league's automatic berth to the FCS playoffs last week.
"We've been watching all this tape (on Colgate) and everyone has been making plays against themselves and that's what we just did," Lehigh head coach Andy Coen said. "We talked a lot about what we need to do, but we just didn't do it. Our punt game was awful. It really hurt us. Colgate's offense is very good. Obviously, their defense is stellar. When you don't do the little things and you start hurting yourselves, you have no chance of beating a team of that caliber."
With winds gusting between 20 and 30 miles per hour, Mayes completed just 8-of-31 passes for 126 yards and the touchdown to Falcone. Senior Luke Christiano returned to the lineup after missing the last five games and led Lehigh with four receptions for 55 yards.
"We went into this game figuring we'd be throwing the ball a lot but we had a lot of dropped balls and mistakes," Coen said. "We didn't do what we could have done. We had to throw the ball a little bit more than we wanted to because we didn't run the ball very well at all against the tough defense that they have. We just put ourselves in bad situations."
The Colgate defense came into the game allowing just 57.8 rushing yards per game. Lehigh mustered just 48 with senior Dominick Bragalone limited to two yards on nine rushes. Freshman Rashawn Allen led Lehigh with 14 carries for 26 yards.
"We threw Rashawn out there and we'll have Dom fresh for Lafayette," Coen said. "At this point, where we are in the season, we need to give our young kids opportunities to continue their growth."
After trading punts to start the game, Colgate used an 11-play, 58-yard drive to give the Raiders a 7-0 lead with 3:30 remaining in the first quarter. Running back James Holland gained the final 26 yards via a 17-yard reception, five-yard run and two consecutive two-yard runs.
That score remained 7-0 until early in the second when the Raiders capped off a 61-yard drive with a 10-yard rushing touchdown by Holland. The extra point was no good as Colgate opened a 13-0 advantage with 12:35 on the clock.
Lehigh had an answer, however, as a 65-yard drive was capped off with the 30-yard touchdown pass to Falcone to pull the Mountain Hawks within 13-6 with 9:43 remaining in the second quarter. The drive also saw Mayes find Christiano for 13 yards, while Mayes later rushed for 18 yards to the Colgate 32-yard line.

The Raiders answered with the final two touchdowns of the half, both of which were set up by good punt returns by TySean Sizer, to take a 27-6 halftime advantage.
Colgate extended its lead in the third quarter, extending its run to 35-0. The Mountain Hawks had a long 16-play, 67-yard drive in the fourth quarter, but it stalled at the Raiders' four-yard line.
Holland finished with 20 carries for 139 yards and three touchdowns for Colgate. Sage Attwood started at quarterback for the Raiders and completed 8-of-14 passes for 146 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 61 yards and two scores.
Junior Keith Woetzel led Lehigh's defensive effort with 11 tackles while sophomore Erik Slater added seven including a tackle for loss.
Lehigh will close out its season next Saturday when the Mountain Hawks visit Lafayette in the 154th meeting of college football's most-played rivalry. The Mountain Hawks will be seeking a fourth straight win over the Leopards and a ninth win in the last 11 games in the series. Game time is set for 12:30 p.m. from Fisher Stadium in Easton.
"I always say this, you win this game, it's like you win a Super Bowl," Coen said. "That's how the kids will look at it."
