FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Mountain Hawks claimed the SHU Hampton Inn by Hilton Shelton Invitational title with a pair of 3-0 victories on Saturday over Hartford and Brown to go along with their 3-1 win against Sacred Heart on Friday night.
Lehigh (9-5) began the day with a closely contested three-set victory Hartford (2-9). The Mountain Hawks eclipsed the .300 mark for the third time this season as they hit .308 collectively. LU closed out the weekend with a dominant 3-0 win over Brown (4-6), claiming set victories of 25-19, 25-16 and 25-13.
Ana Spangenberg had a stellar day offensively as she totaled 22 kills with a 3.67 kills-per-set average while hitting a combined .308 on the day. Lauren Bright and Victoria Hemsath led the way in the blocking department as they each posted nine total blocks, good for an average of 1.80 blocks per set. Emily Develle also cleaned up defensively with a total of 28 digs on the day and a 4.67 digs-per-set average.
Lehigh performed brilliantly both offensively and defensively in the win over Hartford. In addition to hitting .308, the Mountain Hawks combined for 10 total blocks in the match, marking the fifth time this season they have reached double-figures in that category.
Spangenberg led the way with 12 kills on a superb .345 attack percentage in the win over the Hawks. Sabrina Lancaster also had a strong offensive outing with 10 kills and a .273 attack percentage. Bright added eight kills on a .467 attack percentage as she and Hemsath each posted seven block assists in the match, holding Hartford to a .089 team attack percentage.
Hemsath provided some sting in the match against Brown as she posted nine kills on a .300 attack percentage for her top offensive performance of the season. Emily Poole also made key contributions with a six-kill performance on a .714 attack percentage to go along with three block assists.
The Mountain Hawks protected the net well again in the final match of the weekend. LU posted 14 block assists and one solo block while holding Brown to a dreadful .038 attack percentage.
With the four wins this past week, Lehigh finished the non-league slate on a strong wave of momentum. The Mountain Hawks will look to keep the success streak going as they face a tough Colgate team next Friday at home to open Patriot League play.
